Wrongful Death 13 Dead in Shooting At Community College in Oregon

Fire officials reported that there was an active shooter at a community college in the city of Roseburg, Oregon.

The local fire district advised people to stay away from Umpqua Community College on Twitter. The sheriff’s office went to Twitter saying that it received a call about the shooting at 10:38 a.m.

The Attorney General of Oregon, quoting her criminal division, said that 13 people died in the shooting and that the gunman, identified only as a 20-year-old male, is dead.

Eighteen-year-old Kortney Moore, a student at Umpqua, told the Roseburg News-Review newspaper that she was in a writing class when a shot came through a window. The gunman entered her classroom and told people to get on the ground. She said that the gunman started asking people to stand up and state their religion and then he opened fire.

Oregon State Police Lt. Bill Fugate said at least 20 hurt in the shooting.

The spokeswoman for Douglas County Sheriff’s office,Andrea Zielinski, said that there was “no more threat” at the college around 12:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

“It’s extremely concerning and sad,” said Endi Hartigan, spokeswoman for the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office tweeted that counselors are available for students and families who need them at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Roseburg is 180 miles south of Portland. The college has about 3,000 students.
