Pedophile Tracking Northern Minnesota Child Rapist Sentenced to Life in Prison

A northern Minnesota man who prosecutors call a “serial child rapist” has been sentenced to life in prison.

Fifty-three-year-old Rex Lee Furman of Federal Dam, Minnesota, was found guilty in October 2015 of 13 counts of producing child pornography, two counts of distributing child pornography, one count of possessing child pornography, one count of receiving child pornography and one count of committing a sex offense while being required to register as a sex offender.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Melinda Williams said in a statement that Furman spent decades “abusing and raping little girls.”

According to court documents, Furman photographed and sexually abused two young girls in his care and also collected pictures and videos of child pornography that included videos of girls as young as 3 years old being assaulted.

Investigators searched Furman’s residence and say they found more than 500 pornographic videos and images. They say his room had a mounted computer monitor over his bed, a mirror underneath the monitor and a security camera outside the bedroom door to alert him if anyone approached.

According to court documents, Furman was convicted of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in 1981 for sexual misconduct with a 5-year-old girl. He was also convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in 1999 for sexually violating a developmentally-disabled young girl in his care.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
