Wrongful Death Man Sentenced in Killing, Mutilation Case

A man facing charges for a gruesome crime last year was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

John Cawood is accused of killing James Holiness at a homeless camp near Nichols Park and Man o’ War in October 2015. Detectives testified that an exam showed that Holiness was stabbed nearly 80 times and had been decapitated.

Police also believe he burned the body to cover up evidence.

Cawood was found guilty of manslaughter, evidence tampering and abuse of a corpse. A family member of Cawood told LEX 18 that he suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and that she hopes he will get the medical help he needs.
