Missing Person Found Dead in Northland Creek

A 75-year-old Alzheimer’s patient walked away from his Kansas City, North, nursing home Sunday and later was found dead in a creek bed more than a mile and a half away.

There were no signs of foul play, said police, who were awaiting autopsy results to show the cause of death for George Macias.

Employees at the Cherry Hills nursing home at 724 N.E. 79th Terrace reported Macias missing just before noon Sunday. He apparently had been gone a while. A witness reported seeing a man matching his description on Northeast Barry Road at 11:30 a.m.

Police searched for hours in temperatures above 100 degrees to try to find Macias.

Just before 9 p.m., volunteers with the Missouri Search and Rescue canine unit found Macias face down partially in a creek behind a home in the 2100 block of Northeast Barry Road. It looked as if he fell, police said.

Macias was wearing an ankle monitor, but police said they were told the monitor sounds an alarm from the bracelet, not at a device inside the nursing home monitored by employees.

Macias had wandered away before, police said.
