Fraud Investigation Dario Tomas of Oceanside, CA

SAN DIEGO — A former Department of Homeland Security employee has been sentenced to nearly four months in jail after he took money from investors promising them a computer training school would be built in the Philippines.

Dario Tomas of Oceanside, Calif., was sentenced Friday to 115 days in jail after pleading guilty to wire fraud. The North County Times ( http://bit.ly/OuW192) reports that the 53-year-old took $240,000 from two investors during the scheme that started five years ago.

Tomas created false email accounts in the names of others and used those accounts to send messages to the investors to make it appear as if the project was progressing.

Authorities say Tomas later admitted he gambled the money away.

Tomas served two years in South Korea for the crime before returning to the United States in April.
