Wrongful Death Death Penalty Off the Table in Case of UK Chef’s Murder

The death penalty has been taken off the table for two men charged in the death of a University of Kentucky chef.

Mark Taylor and Timothy Ballard appeared in court Friday morning. Their attorneys argued that the death penalty should not be an option in the murder case of Alex Johnson.

Police say the men lured Alex Johnson into their car back in December, beat him to death and dumped his body in a barrel into the Kentucky River. Taylor is charged with murder and kidnapping. Ballard is charged with kidnapping and evidence tampering.

Over three years ago, LEX 18’s Kristen Pflum sat down with an inmate named James Watts, who gave her a sob story about what landed him in jail.

He was charged back then with posing as a Kentucky Eagle employee and looking to fix tap lines in Lexington bars.

He even stole from his former school.

“When you’ve got a thousand dollar a day drug habit, you don’t just pluck it off the tree branches,” said Watts.

He was sentenced to eight years in jail and did about 18 months. He is allegedly back to his old tricks.

“It just goes to show you that this guy’s raging addiction is so out of control he can’t control himself,” said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

Last week, Lexington Police say Watts stole keys from the locker room of the High Street YMCA, found the car they belonged to and took off with it.

Three days later he allegedly did the same thing at Wildcat Fitness on Hartland Parkway.

Owners of the gym say he signed up for a membership, went to the locker room, found a set of keys and drove the stolen car right out of the lot.

“Right now we have two gyms where cars have been stolen from as well as evidence he could be connected to burglaries in the area,” said Thomas.

Lexington Police arrested Watts on an unrelated drug investigation last night. He was in possession of heroin.
