Insurance Fraud Surry County, NC Mom and Son Charged

A Surry County mother and her son are charged with one count each of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense.

Jackson Del Simpson, 19, was arrested Monday and Joy Michelle Simpson, 44, was arrested February 25, according to an announcement from Wayne Goodwin, insurance commissioner, Thursday. Investigators with the Department of Insurance claim Jackson Simpson and his mother, Joy Simpson, took $6,924.65 from Progressive Southeastern Insurance Company. That’s after they claimed their motorcycle was stolen in July 2012.

Investigators say Joy Simpson had someone move the motorcycle to another home on the day they reported it stolen. However, law enforcement officers found it October 14, 2012 and notified the insurance company.

Jackson Simpson was placed under a $1,000 secured bond. Joy Simpson was arrested and released on a written promise to appear in court.
