Fraud Investigation Rowan Co. Sheriff’s Officials Make Huge Counterfeit Goods Bust

Deputies say a multi-million dollar criminal operation in Morehead has been shut down.

Rowan County Sheriff’s officials say the businesses Brand Closeouts and Skaggs Wholesale had been selling counterfeit goods for years. During the course of the investigation, they uncovered racks of big name brands such as Michael Kors, North Face, Juicy Couture. Unfortunately, all of it was fake.

Warrants were served on the companies after a 10-month investigation. Just as authorities expected, they found millions of dollars in counterfeit products in both locations. In addition to possession of the goods, police found out the company was doing its own manufacturing.

The company is owned by Jamie and George Skaggs. The couple has not been charged but could face both state and federal charges for buying and selling counterfeit merchandise, as well as charges of tax fraud.

“When you’re doing such a big business and you’re making a lot of money, it just keeps flowing in, the product keeps flowing in and you make a lot of money you just think, well I can get away with it. I assume that’s what they think,” says Chief Deputy Joe Cline.

The merchandise itself isn’t worth millions, but detectives arrive at the sum total of the products as if they were to be sold in stores as the real deal.

The department says even though there have been no arrests, the department says there will be.
