Private Detective: 9 Indicted in Pappy Van Winkle Heist

Detectives with the Franklin County Sheriff’s tell LEX 18 that nine people have been indicted in a bourbon heist that has garnered international attention.

Nine people, including an employee of Wild Turkey and two employees of Buffalo Trace Distillery have been indicted in an organized crime ring which sheriff’s officials say goes back to 2008.

Officers are investigating at least one employee from the Wild Turkey Distillery who they believe helped Gilbert “Toby” Curtsinger steal at least five barrels of bourbon. Sheriff’s officials say these alleged thefts may have been going on for years and that Curtsinger was the ringleader.

Curtsinger’s wife Julie was also indicted. Others indicted are as follows: Mark S. Searcy, Ronnie Lee Hubbard, Dusty H. Adkins, Christopher L. Preston, Joshua T. Preston, Shawn Ballard and Robert McKinney. The indictment calls them a “criminal syndicate.”

Sheriff Pat Melton said the nine accused people met each other playing softball.

Deputies also say that easily more than 300 bottles of Pappy were stolen and sold over the years for $800 a bottle

There are also charges related to the trafficking of anabolic steroids.

In October 2013, a large amount of Pappy Van Winkle was stolen from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Officials have recovered several bottles of the stolen Pappy that are linked to Curtsinger.

Curtsinger was a Buffalo Trace Distillery employee.

The sheriff’s office will hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
