Private Detective: Morgan Co. Man in Critical Condition After Shooting

A man shot Wednesday afternoon in Morgan County remained in critical condition at UK Hospital on Thursday.

Kentucky State Police said Sam Sparks, 21, was shot along Perry Road in the county.

“The man shot him twice: once in the chest and once in the shoulder,” Sparks’ brother-in-law, Brian Gibbs told LEX 18’s Josh Breslow.

While it’s clear that Sparks was shot multiple times, investigators are trying to figure out what led up to the incident.

“We’re still trying to gather all the information that’s involved in this case,” said Trooper Joe Veeneman with Kentucky State Police. “There’s a possibility, looking into this case, that it could be a situation where it was a self-defense.”

According to Sparks’ family, the young man was on Perry Road to help a woman track down a stolen motorcycle. While Sparks was down on the ground looking at a bike’s VIN, Gibbs said shots were fired.

Sparks was flown to UK Hospital with injuries considered to be life-threatening. While Sparks could require surgery, Gibbs said the 21-year-old is expected to survive.

“I know there’s two sides to every story. We don’t know his side because he’s in the condition that he’s in,” said Gibbs.

Sparks’ family told LEX 18 that they want the shooter to be charged; however, State Police said that decision will be likely be left up to a grand jury.
