A Texas man who was convicted of repeatedly sexually assaulting a female relative under the age of 14 has received a sentence of almost 700 years in prison.
Kelley Alexander Lewis, of Midland, Texas, has been sentenced to 693 years in prison — a 99-year sentence for each of the seven counts he has been convicted of, according to the Daily Mail. Prosecutors said the assaults, which targeted a young family member, were carried out over a four-month period in 2014.

Lewis was also fined $10,000 for each count, totaling $70,000 in fines. The range of prison time for each charge was five to 99 years, and on Aug. 18, jurors decided Lewis should receive the maximum sentence for each charge.
According to statistics from the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas, 1 in every 4 girls in Texas will be sexually abused before her 18th birthday. The same set of statistics say 1 in every 6 boys in the state is abused before they turn 18.
Nearly 70 percent of all reported sexual assaults occur to children ages 17 and under, according to The Children’s Assessment Center, with victimization rates for children aged 13 to 17 estimated as being 2.3 times higher than that of adults. Most child victims know and trust the adults who abuse them.
Commenters online responded to Lewis’ sentence positively, with some suggesting other sex offenders should receive similar sentences.
“I love my state!” said one commenter on Daily Mail. “I wish all child rapists could get the same sentence.”
