Wrongful Death Mother, Grandparents Accused of Neglect After Teen’s Death

Three people have been arrested following the death of a Northern Kentucky teenager.

WLWT reports that 18-year-old Joseph Bishop died at Children’s Hospital on Saturday.

Police said that the teenager was diagnosed with Duschenne Muscular Dystrophy during his childhood and had been bedridden for the last two years. Police say that he was supposed to be taken to the hospital every six months for a checkup, but he hadn’t been since October 2014.

One neighbor told WLWT that she got to know the family, but had no idea Joseph Bishop was even inside the home.

“It’s just sad knowing that you think somebody is so nice on the street you live on. That they’re good people and you talk to them and you’ve helped them,” said Stacy Leach.

On Friday night, one of his relatives called 911 saying that the teen was having trouble breathing. He died the next day. The hospital stated that the teen had large ulcers on his arms, legs, and back and that some of his muscles and bones were exposed. They also said that he had sepsis from abuse or neglect.

Joseph’s mother, Jamie Bishop, is accused of failing to provide care and medical treatment for the teen.

WLWT reports that Jamie Bishop and Joseph’s grandfather, Raymond Martin, told investigators that they had seen the bed sores on Joseph and understood that he needed medical treatment, but ultimately decided not to seek assistance because they were afraid of being accused of neglect.

“I’m mad, I’m hurt. All she had to do was just ask me for help. I would have helped her, taken him to the doctor, did what I could,” said Leach.

Jamie Bishop, Raymond Martin, and Joseph’s grandmother Sharon Martin have all been charged with second-degree manslaughter.

WLWT reports that Sharon Martin declined to answer the investigator’s questions.

The three were taken into custody and are being held in the Kenton County Detention Center.
