Identity Theft Denali State Bank in AK Warns Customers

Denali State Bank has warned its customers that one of its desktop computers was mistakenly taken to a transfer site and it does not know what happened to it. So just in case, the bank is offering one year of free identity theft protection.

The computer was password-protected, the bank says.

“Our attempts to recover the computer were unsuccessful and although we believe that the computer was transferred to the landfill where it was compacted and destroyed, we are unable to confirm this,” Denali President Steve Lundgren said in a letter to bank customers this week.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“The computer contained customer information in the form of daily reports which would include customer’s name, account number, balance and transaction information and in some cases, addresses and Social Security numbers. We believe it is very unlikely that the computer contained security information such as user ID information, passwords, customer responses to account security questions or drivers’ license numbers.”

Lundgren said the bank “deeply regrets that this incident occurred” and that the bank is offering one year of free identify theft protection from TrustedID. The letter includes instructions on how to get the theft protection.

“This proactive protection is designed to stop any possible identity theft or fraud before it happens,” he wrote.

Arson Investigation Fire Destroys Small Business in Anderson County, KY

Investigators said a fire at an Anderson County scrap metal business looks suspicious. The business owner’s daughters, said their father has two problems, finding the person who set the fire and the money to rebuild.

Police said they think someone tried to set a fire at Red’s Welding and Scrap Removal twice in one week. Their first attempt was unsuccessful. The second burned the business to the ground.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

“We never dreamed that they would come back a second time. Just never thought that would happen, but when it did it just really devastated everybody. We just can’t understand why somebody would do somebody that way,” said Alice Proctor.

Alice Proctor and Joyce Bast’s family owns the destroyed scrap metal operation. The two sisters grew up watching their parents work hard for every penny earned. Now, in their 60’s Oscar and Joyce Shingleton lost everything. The daughters said Oscar lost his livelihood, how he made his money to pay the bills.

A way of life,up in flames. Tonight all that remained was a smoldering silhouette.

“We don’t understand who would have done this and why, because everybody seems to think so much of him,” stated Joyce Bast.

So the sisters are left to wonder. Why was their family’s business targeted? Who started the fire and how will their parents make ends meet?

“Of course we will all give them anything we got, but we are going above beyond that for our parents, we will do whatever that takes to help them,” explained Bast.

Even if that means going against their father’s wishes and asking for money.

Alice Proctor said her father had insurance, but not very much and certainly not enough to rebuild his business.

Private Investigator – Whats the difference between Slander and Libel?

Slander is The action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person’s reputation.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

When the slander takes place in writing it is called libel (such as a newspaper runs a false story) and that can be easier to prove in court so long as you can show that the writer knew or should have known what was being said is false.

Fraud Investigation Federal Cellphone Fraud

Oklahoma is “ground zero for government cellphone fraud,” charges a TV news team that investigated a federal program offering free cellphones and near-free mobile service to low-income residents.

The Oklahoma Impact Team — of “News On 6” in Tulsa and “News 9” in Oklahoma City — claims the Lifeline program is being abused by consumers who don’t qualify for help.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Lifeline is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program established in 1985 to ensure low-income Americans have a phone to connect with jobs, family and emergency services. The program, which initially covered landlines, was expanded to include cellphones in 2003.

Lifeline members pay as little as 99 cents a month for a mobile subscription. The government makes up the difference to participating service providers. Consumers finance most of the program through a universal service charge on their phone bills, which ranges from $2.50 to $2.75 a month per household.

In 2011, the Lifeline program spent $1.75 billion, most of it subsidizing cellphone service.

According to the FCC, the program has been a success, with phone use among low-income households increasing from 80 percent in 1985 to 95 percent in 2011.

Allegations of fraud have dogged the program, however; a TV news team found similar irregularities in Minnesota earlier this year, as GIMBY’s The Backyard Fence reported. The FCC has overhauled Lifeline to address those complaints, discovering and canceling 700,000 duplicate accounts just last year. It recently drafted stricter screening rules for participating companies, to ensure that only people who qualify receive the benefits of the program.

But as investigators from the Oklahoma Impact Team found, cell company employees tasked with meeting phone-giveaway quotas are bending, breaking and ignoring the rules — many of them handing out phones without requesting more than the flash of an I.D. card.

One journalist allegedly got a phone without meeting even that minimal qualification. The phone distributor “identified himself as an employee of Easy Wireless,” Jennifer Loren reported on News 9. “He gave me a flip phone, a charger and a post card with a toll-free customer service number for Easy Wireless.”

There’s a simple reason why Oklahoma is an attractive place for government-subsidized cellphone fraud: in most states, companies that provide Lifeline phones earn an average of $10 per month per phone – but customers who live on federally-recognized tribal lands get enhanced benefits, so providers can earn as much as $35 per month per phone there. In Oklahoma, the FCC’s “Tribal Lands” provision even applies to “former reservation” land, meaning the subsidy covers nearly the entire state.

TV news investigators aren’t the only Oklahomans disgruntled about Lifeline. The program has long been a target of Senator Tom Coburn, whose annual Wastebook report details allegedly reckless and wasteful federal spending.

“With providers incentivized to maximize the number of phones they hand out, significant fraud and abuse have plagued the program in recent years,” says this year’s Wastebook entry about Lifeline.

Insurance Fraud Christmas Fire Leads to Woman’s Arrest

State insurance investigators say 47 year old Lorrie Laurel overstated the value of the home and they couldn’t find any trace of 15 items supposedly destroyed by the flames. The fire gutted the lake home near Crystal Lake in December 28th.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Laurel and her husband own the home, which was occupied at the time by her brother.

The fire occurred one day before Laurels policy with Cotton States Insurance was to be cancelled.

She filed a claim for more than $435,000 in damages.

State investigators say claims for the 15 items were more than $64,000. But, they say they couldn’t find any evidence of those items in the destroyed home. But they says they did find some very similar items, including a totem pole, a carved bench, and some diving gear in Laurel’s Chipley home when they interviewed her.

Laurel is free after posting a $10,000 bond on the insurance fraud charge

Private Investigator – Is it illegal for me to follow someone like a private investigator?

It is not illegal to have anyone followed by a licensed private investigator.

It would be illegal for a non-licensed individual to purposely follow the person in question as this would fall under stalking.

Identity Theft Fresno Woman Arrested on 224 Counts

A Fresno woman is behind bars suspected of committing more than 200 felonies. The arrest came after a nearly eight month long investigation.

The Fresno District Attorney’s Office tell us this is one of the biggest cases it’s ever had against a single person.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

45-year-old Leisha Nelson was arrested on 224 counts of identity theft and burglary. She’s accused of stealing checks and credit cards from at least 61 victims between Chico and Visalia.

During a search of Nelson’s home, detectives seized a computer, a check making software program, checks and false identifications.

The investigation stemmed from an elder financial abuse case back in March. Authorities say a care provider stole checks and credit cards from an elderly victim. Nelson apparently knew the provider and got a hold of the items.

The District Attorney’s complaint shows Nelson also hit the Well-Being Chiropractic Group in Fresno and Baker Commodities in Hanford, as well as several local Walmart stores.

Deputy Chris Curtice from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said, “That’s a lot of counts and the fact that the District Attorney’s Office went and filed that many counts tells you what kind of case this is. But this is one case and this has just been since this last year and this type of thing goes on every single day.”

Nelson was already awaiting trial for 25 counts of identity, grand theft and burglary spanning from 2008 to 2010. A pretrial hearing for those charges will be held Wednesday, and her arraignment for the new charges is also scheduled at the same time.

Nelson is being held on $4.8 million bond.
