Accident Reconstruction Woman Killed in Fiery Mercer County Crash

By late Wednesday night, Mercer County officials were still trying to identify a woman killed in a fiery single vehicle crash from earlier in the day.

The wreck happened on Bohon Road near Mt. Pleasant Road, just outside of Harrodsburg. Both lanes of Bohon Road were shut down for hours, after investigators said a woman somehow lost control of her car.

“Here she comes over the hill, and she was running better than 55 (mph). And then I start back weed eating, and I heard a big POW,” said Kevin Sallee.

Sallee was doing yard work when a horrible scene unfolded feet away, at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said a young woman driving a Chevy Impala somehow lost control of the car in front of a bridge.

“She hit the guardrail before you get to the bridge, and I happened to turn around and she was headed to the others side of the bridge,” said Sallee.

Sallee said the woman was speeding and nearly missed an oncoming car, before over-correcting once again and hitting a tree head on. At that point witnesses said the car quickly went up in flames and there wasn’t much they could do to help.

“It just starts smoking real bad, and I said, oh please get her out,” said Sallee.

Witnesses drenched the car with water, however they couldn’t stop the fire. While emergency crews did their best when they arrived, it was sadly too late.

“It’s just terrible for her, for the family,” said Jacob Long, who lives nearby.

Neighbors, such as Long, heard the news as they took detours home to avoid the closed stretch of the road.

“He said the accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. I believe. And I pulled up at around 4 p.m. and traffic was still having to be redirected,” said Long.

It’s an area where Salle said he has seen his share of bad crashes. As he continues doing yard work near the road, he hopes this will be the last bad accident that happens.

“They need to slow down on this road,” said Sallee.

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said it’s too early to know if there were other contributing factors in the crash.

Missing Person Amber Alert Issued for Hawkins County, TN

An amber alert has been issued for a missing Hawkins County girl, who willingly left her Surgoinsville home Monday night.

Hayleigh Wilson, 14, was last seen at a Walmart in Marion, North Carolina, on Tuesday morning with a sex offender.

She is in the company of 41-year-old Benjamin Shook, who has an active warrant for failure to register as a sex offender in Georgia.

“We realized Hayleigh was gone and the key was missing from my purse,” Hayleigh’s mother, Stacy Johnston, said.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Family members and authorities believe that Hayleigh stole her step-fathers car, along with his wallet that was inside.

“We were hoping she’d run off with one of her little boyfriends, to have a night out on the town, but it didn’t work out that way,” Hayleigh’s father, Eddie Wilson said.

Law enforcement cannot confirm the place where Hayleigh and Shook met up.

Hayleigh’s parents both said they believe their daughter met Shook through a mobile app called Kik, which is an instant messaging application.

“I’m positive if she’d known that this guy was a sex offender, the child that she is, she would’ve never accepted someone like that,” Eddie Wilson said. “These pedophiles have ways of getting into kids’ minds, and just destroying them.”

Family and community members said this behavior is shocking.

“I’ve known Hayleigh for awhile. She seemed like a pretty normal kid, I mean, straight A student,” Surgoinsville Police Chief, James Hammonds.

However, several months ago, Hayleigh’s mother found text messages on her daughters phone from older men.

“I found text messages with older men that I did not think were appropriate,” Johnston said.

Hayleigh lost phone privileges, but her mom said inappropriate conversations continued on social media.

“Come to find out, as of yesterday, she has created other accounts that we were not aware of,” Johnston said.

Surveillance pictures show Hayleigh and Shook walking into the Walmart in Marion, North Carolina with an empty cart. Pictures taken later show the pair leaving Walmart empty handed, and getting into the stolen maroon Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

Authorities say they tried to use Hayleigh’s stepfather’s stolen credit card to buy camping gear. Investigators worry their plan is to get off the grid.

“That’s kinda what we was worried about at first,” Hammonds said.

As of Wednesday evening, local and federal law enforcement were following many different leads in different states about where Hayleigh may be.

“Be a man about it. She’s just a 14-year-old child. He has no business with her,” Eddie Wilson said.

“I love you, and I miss you. We want you home,” Johnston said.

Authorities ask if you have any information on Wilson or Shook, contact the Surgoinsville Police Department at 423-272-7121 or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND.Authorities say Shook has multiple tattoos, and drives a maroon Ford Explorer Sport Trac. He has a Tennessee license plate with tag D6020D.

Wrongful Death Richmond Police Offering Reward in Double Murder

Richmond Police are offering a five thousand dollar reward for answers in a double murder from one year ago.

And it’s been a year of no answers for the families of Avery Boochie Evans and Karen Simpson. The couple was brutally murdered at their home on Valley Street in Richmond.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“It’s been a year, there’s no arrests, we’re devastated for losing them,” says Kelly Sproles, Simpson’s sister. She says she and her other sisters decided to post flyers around town in hopes of getting the answers they’ve been urgently seeking.

Then yesterday Richmond Police offered the reward on a poster of their own, for anyone who can provide information leading to the killer. The department sent DNA evidence to the State Central Lab for testing back in September, but they won’t say whether they’ve received the results.

Sproles says she wants closure, and to know that a dangerous person has been caught.

Three people have been indicted in the shooting death of a UK student in April of this year.

20-year-old Efrain Diaz Jr. and 18-year-old Justin Smith, as well as 17-year-old Roman Gonzalez Jr. have been indicted on charges of murder and first degree robbery in connection with the death of 22-year-old Jonathan Krueger.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Krueger was taken to UK Hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to investigators, the men did not know Krueger and the incident appeared to be random. Police believe that Gonzalez was the triggerman.

Krueger was from Perrysburg, Ohio, outside of Toledo and worked for the Kentucky Kernel as a photographer.

Along with the murder and first degree robbery charges, Justin Smith has also been charged with tampering with physical evidence and fleeing or evading police.

Accident Reconstruction Deadly Accident in Berea

Berea police are investigating a deadly crash on southbound I-75, near mile marker 76.

It happened Tuesday evening near the entrance ramp to the interstate.

They believe the driver of a small SUV lost control and rear-ended a tractor trailer, killing the driver of the SUV.

“It was a pretty bad accident,” said Sgt. Jake Reed, with Berea Police Department. “Unfortunately one of the occupants in one of the vehicles is deceased.”

http://liarcatchers.com/accident_reconstruction.html

As investigators try to find out exactly why the driver of the SUV hit the truck, Berea police say they received calls earlier in the day from drivers concerned about traffic on the interstate.

“Apparently traffic was moving at a slower pace this afternoon which probably played into this collision,” said Sgt. Reed.

“It’s terrible,” said John Rose, driver.  “That part of the interstate right there is terrible.”

Police shut down one lane of  I-75 southbound for several hours as investigators reconstructed the scene.

Some people who live in the area say they’re not surprised to hear about the wreck and believe that part of the interstate can be very dangerous.

“There has been three wrecks in the last two months right around this area there,” said Rose.

With construction not too far away, drivers hope it will eliminate these fatal wrecks.

“They’re trying to widen it and make it a better highway,” said Rose. “But until they do it it’s just going to be awful.”

“We just want to encourage people when they approach this area to slow down and watch out,” said Sgt. Reed.

The coroner has not released the name of the victim pending family notification.

Police say the driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt.

Identity Theft Lexington Police Searching For Credit Card Thief

Lexington Police aren’t sure how a man caught on camera using stolen credit cards is getting them, but they want him stopped before he gets away with it again.

Officers say the ease with which this crook worked back on January 5, only minutes after the credit cards were stolen, leads them to believe he’s done the same crime before.

“He’s obviously experienced at doing this,” says Detective Mark Thomas. “This is something that he did before he knew these credit cards would get cut off. Once the owner realized his wallet was stolen, he was gonna call and cancel his credit cards.”

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

But the thief worked so quickly, bouncing from Speedway to Speedway, that he racked up charges on three different credit cards from the victim’s wallet.

Although the total amount is less than a thousand dollars, it’s not the dollar amount that concerns financial crimes detectives.

“The reason it’s important we speak to this person is because, a), we believe he’s responsible for the theft,” Thomas says. “We also believe he knowingly used these stolen cards not in his name.  And he’s wanted in connection to additional theft cases.”

Police say the suspect, driving a silver Dodge Caravan or Plymouth Voyager, matches the description in other thefts. Surveillance photos, detectives say, are the key to stopping him.

Crime Stoppers is offering cash for information that breaks the case. If you know the man in the photo, call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 859.253.2020.
