Fraud Investigation Cryptowall Ransomware Schemes

Data from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) shows ransomware continues to spread and is infecting devices around the globe. Recent IC3 reporting identifies CryptoWall as the most current and significant ransomware threat targeting U.S. individuals and businesses.1 CryptoWall and its variants have been used actively to target U.S. victims since April 2014. The financial impact to victims goes beyond the ransom fee itself, which is typically between $200 and $10,000. Many victims incur additional costs associated with network mitigation, network countermeasures, loss of productivity, legal fees, IT services, and/or the purchase of credit monitoring services for employees or customers. Between April 2014 and June 2015, the IC3 received 992 CryptoWall-related complaints, with victims reporting losses totaling over $18 million.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

These financial fraud schemes target both individuals and businesses, are usually very successful, and have a significant impact on victims. The problem begins when the victim clicks on an infected advertisement, email, or attachment, or visits an infected website. Once the victim’s device is infected with the ransomware variant, the victim’s files become encrypted. In most cases, once the victim pays a ransom fee, he or she regains access to the files that were encrypted. Most criminals involved in ransomware schemes demand payment in Bitcoin. Criminals prefer Bitcoin because it’s easy to use, fast, publicly available, decentralized, and provides a sense of heightened security/anonymity.

If you believe you have been a victim of this type of scam, you should reach out to your local FBI field office. You may also file a complaint with the IC3 at www.IC3.gov. Please provide any relevant information in your complaint.

Tips to protect yourself:

  • Always use antivirus software and a firewall. It’s important to obtain and use antivirus software and firewalls from reputable companies. It’s also important to continually maintain both of these through automatic updates.
  • Enable popup blockers. Popups are regularly used by criminals to spread malicious software. To avoid accidental clicks on or within popups, it’s best to prevent them from appearing in the first place.
  • Always back up the content on your computer. If you back up, verify, and maintain offline copies of your personal and application data, ransomware scams will have limited impact on you. If you are targeted, instead of worrying about paying a ransom to get your data back, you can simply have your system wiped clean and then reload your files.
  • Be skeptical. Don’t click on any emails or attachments you don’t recognize, and avoid suspicious websites altogether.

If you receive a ransomware popup or message on your device alerting you to an infection, immediately disconnect from the Internet to avoid any additional infections or data losses. Alert your local law enforcement personnel and file a complaint at www.IC3.gov.

1Ransomware is a type of malware (or malicious software) that blocks access to a computer system or files until a monetary amount is paid.

Wrongful Death Remains of VA Boy Missing Since 2004 Found in Mother’s Car

Human remains found in a car during a traffic stop in Hampton are those of the driver’s son, Va. State Police said Friday.

The Office of the Medical Examiner has confirmed the remains are those of 44-year-old Tonya Slaton’s biological son, Quincy Jamar Davis.

State police say there are no witnesses who have seen Davis since 2004 when he was in seventh-grade at Virginia Beach Middle School. Davis would have turned 25 on Tuesday.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Slaton, who is from Richmond, was driving a Ford Mustang when she was pulled over on Interstate 64 near Exit 265 for Rip Rap Road in Hampton around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6.

Her last known address was in the 100 block of Foushee Street in Richmond.

According to a search warrant obtained by WVEC-TV, the trooper noticed a large white spot on the floorboard behind the driver’s seat. Slaton said it was from bleach.

Slaton told the trooper she only had clothes in her trunk but when the trooper opened it he smelled “rotting flesh.” Slaton began throwing clothes on top of the spare tire, which is where the trooper found two plastic bags wrapped in duct tape full human remains, according to the document.

Among the other items seized from the car were an Apple iPhone, a white sweater that contained fibers and possibly hair, a YMCA card, carpet from the trunk and both sides of the back seat floor and a paper box.

Slaton was charged with concealment of a dead body and remains in jail without bond. Additional charges are pending.

This is not the first time Slaton faced charges in Hampton.

She pleaded guilty to shooting at, but not injuring, a man inside a home in 2007. According to a press release from the time of the shooting, Hampton police said they were searching for Slaton in a 2003 black Mustang convertible.

Slaton is due in Hampton court Monday, according to online court records.

Identity Theft California Woman Indicted on 66 Charges

A California woman arrested June 10 in Blue Ash is facing 66 charges related to identity theft, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters announced Monday.

Allison Spadafore, 30, was charged Monday with 45 counts of identity fraud, 15 counts of criminal tools, two counts of money laundering, two counts of misuse of credit card, one count of attempted misuse of credit card and one count of obstructing official business, Deters said in a Monday release.

Deters’ office alleges Spadafore used 40 stolen identities to open bank accounts and make purchases.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The fraudulent activity is likely to cost affected banks and merchants at least $50,000, the release stated.

The indictments against Spadafore are based on the findings of an Evendale Police Department investigation launched after her June 10 arrest in Blue Ash.

Walgreens employees in Evendale discovered Spadafore’s attempt to purchase Pay-Pal gift cards with a fraudulent credit card, according to the release.

Spadafore ran from the Evendale Walgreens when employees became suspicious, the release said. Employees followed her out and collected license plate information that was passed along to authorities.

She traveled to the Walgreens in Blue Ash where authorities made the arrest.

Deters praised the work of the Walgreens employees in Evendale for detecting the fraudulent activity, saying, “If not for the quick action by the employees at Walgreens and the Evendale police department, who knows how long this criminal activity would have continued.

“The investigation is on-going and the total loss amount is difficult to estimate. She was apparently part of a network that had ties to a prison inmate currently serving time in a California prison. Identity theft is a growing problem in our community and our stores and banks are greatly harmed by this type of fraud.”

Pedophile Tracking Online Sting Nets 11 Arrests in Galveston, TX

Galveston Police say 11 people thought they were going to a Galveston apartment to meet underage children for sex. Detectives say they’d actually been chatting online with police, and that’s was waiting behind the door for the suspects. Police Chief Henry Porretto said: “after assuring the perpetrators knew the victims were underage, after the same subjects described in detail what sexual acts they would like to do to them, they were told “I’m home alone by myself right now and were given an address where the child lived.”

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

The three day sting was called “Operation on the Hook,” a multi-agency effort, in which federal and local law enforcement officers posed online as children.

Added the chief, “these officers would engage in conversations with both men and women who were clearly looking for sex with children.” It’s become a problem in Galveston. Not a single suspect was from the city, yet that’s where they allegedly went to have sex with a child. Here’s a sample of one online conversation:

Suspect: “where are you and how old”

Officer: “14 next week”

Suspect: “Ur thirteen??”

Officer “Yes.”

8 suspects were charged with felony solicitation of a minor online, while 3 others were charged with prostitution and engaging in organized criminal activity. The chief hopes that will send a message.
