Wrongful Death Infant Dead After Throat Cut With Power Saw

A 9-month-old girl is dead after a relative cut her throat with a power saw, a Chicago police official with knowledge of the investigation said Monday.

Officers found the child after being called Monday morning to a building on the city’s West Side.

The police official confirmed media reports that a 52-year-old relative used a circular saw to cut the baby’s throat, apparently because the girl wouldn’t stop crying. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an official autopsy had not been performed.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The official said the woman is in police custody at a hospital with self-inflicted wounds.

Police said both the baby and the woman were found by another relative.

Illinois Department of Children and Family Services officials said the agency had no prior contact with the family. Authorities said no other children were present in the home at the time of the incident.

Ben Llamas works with the child’s father and drove him to the scene. Llamas told the Chicago Tribune the father was upset but did not talk about what happened.

His friend had moved into that house about a year ago with a woman, Llamas said. Together the couple had a young child.

“At first, he was reluctant, but when the baby came, he fell in love,” Llamas said. “He shows us pictures of that baby every day.”

Neighbors said several people live in the home where the baby was found.

“They were really good people,” Francisco Arreola told the Chicago Tribune in Spanish. “I would always see them and they were very happy. I never heard them fight or anything.”

Private Detective: 6 Indicted in Drug-dealing Ring in Indiana, Ohio and Texas

Six people have been indicted for their alleged roles in a large-scale cocaine distribution network in three states that resulted in the seizure of more than 100 kilograms of cocaine, more than $5.9 million in cash and numerous firearms and vehicles, United States Attorney David Capp said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference in Citizens Square.

Those indicted are: Allan L. Bates, 37, of Fort Wayne; James W. Lepper, 66, of Butler; Larry J. Norton, 63, of Mission, Texas, and formerly of Fort Wayne; Eric D. White, 52, of Fort Wayne; Ryan Bowman, 35, of Payne, Ohio; and DeWayne Lewis, 40, of Greenwood, who was named in a separate indictment.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Capp said the majority of the arrests were made in January and February. Bates, considered by law enforcement to be a key figure in the network, was arrested March 1. All the men are being held without bond.

Capp said the network also involved heroin and marijuana.

The indictments were the result of an extensive law enforcement investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Fort Wayne Safe Streets Task Force, consisting of the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police, who executed 17 federal searches in Indiana, Ohio and Texas. The DeKalb County and Johnson County Prosecutor’s offices also obtained two state search warrants.

Bates, Lepper, Norton, White and Bowman face felony drug dealing charges — to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute controlled substances, including 1 kilogram or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of heroin, a Schedule I Controlled Substance, 5 kilograms or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine, a Schedule II Controlled Substance, and marijuana, a Schedule I Controlled Substance, according to their indictment.

Capp said the drugs were transported from Mexico into Mission, Texas, where Norton lives, and then would make their way up to Indiana, and the cash would return to Mission.

Norton was pulled over by Indiana State Police on Nov. 7 in DeKalb County where police found $400,000 in hidden compartments within his truck, according to Capp.

Dewayne Lewis, 40, faces a felony drug dealing charge — by knowingly and intentionally possessing with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, including 5 kilograms or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine, a Schedule II Controlled Substance, according to his indictment.

Indiana State Police investigated Lewis’ actions on Feb. 3 at a Greenwood hotel, in which a woman brought a gym bag from a vehicle registered to Lewis to a particular room in the hotel and left without it, according to a probable cause affidavit. A certified drug dog was brought to the public hallway, where the dog alerted officers of the presence of narcotics from the suspected room.

Later that day, officers served a search warrant on the room, and Lewis was inside. Officers found a substantial amount of cash and a total of 19 packages of suspected cocaine. Each cocaine package was consistent in size with a kilogram, and one of the packages field-tested positive for cocaine, according to authorities.

Lewis was interviewed by the FBI on Feb. 4 , and Lewis admitted that he worked for a drug trafficking ring in Fort Wayne and that he was paid to transport cocaine and drug proceeds.

Lewis also said during the evening hours of Feb. 1, he went to a residence in Butler and retrieved the kilograms of cocaine and the cash from a pole barn. He said he then transported the cocaine and money to Greenwood and later to the hotel room where he was arrested.

This case has been assigned to and will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony W. Geller.

Capp said the investigation continues, and other individuals of interest exist. “We’ve dismantled several networks,” Capp said. “We are organized. We know who you are, and we will get you.”

Private Detective: Georgetown Man Accused of Kidnapping Ex-Wife

A Scott County man is facing a long list of charges, because police said he kidnapped his ex-wife using duct tape, drew crude images on her body, and assaulted her in front of their son. It happened Sunday on Salinger Drive in Georgetown.

On the quiet street inside the home in the 100 block of Salinger Drive, neighbors said they never thought 29-year-old Zachary Shelton could be accused of such a vicious crime.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

“Oh my God! Why would somebody do something like that? I think it’s sick,” said Marianne Lynn, who lives across from Shelton’s home.

“To me this sounds like kind of a messed up situation between a family,” added Andrew Height. He lives three doors down from Shelton’s house where the alleged attack occurred.

In court documents, Georgetown Police said the situation started on Sunday, when Shelton’s ex-wife was visiting her son. She told officers she was suddenly attacked. According to the arrest citation Shelton duct taped the woman’s hands and feet together, then drew a lewd image on her forearm and face.

However, the alleged attack didn’t end there. According to court documents, Shelton had their son draw a tattoo on her back. Then, Shelton is accused of smacking the woman in the stomach, dragging her across the floor and pulling her underwear until it ripped. Police said when they got there, they found a photo of the scene.

“I mean, that little boy is going to remember what daddy did to mommy and that’s sad,” said Lynn.

According to court documents, Shelton admitted the crime to police. However, he said it was all in fun, and that he had no ill intent in his actions. Since he bonded out of jail on Tuesday, LEX 18 went to get his side of the story. However, he didn’t answer the door at his house.

So, could this have simply been a prank taken too far? “I wouldn’t say that’s so much a prank, because you don’t violate some body’s body, tie them up and drag them across the floor as a prank,” said Height.

Whatever the case, neighbors said they didn’t find it funny. “I hope he doesn’t do it again. I hope he gets help,” said Lynn.

Shelton was arrested for several crimes including kidnapping, assault, unlawful transaction with a minor, and harassment.

Insurance Fraud ND Farmers Sentenced to Prison

Two North Dakota brothers were sentenced Monday to prison time and ordered to pay back more than $900,000 for intentionally destroying potatoes to collect federal farm insurance payments.

In separate hearings, U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson sentenced Aaron Johnson to four years in prison and Derek Johnson to 1½ years in prison. A jury in December convicted the pair of conspiring to receive illegal payments and giving false statements.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Prosecutors accused the brothers of adding spoiled and frozen potatoes to their stored crop and using portable heaters to make the potatoes deteriorate faster. The defendants found that the best way to wreck the crop was using Rid-X, a chemical that’s designed to dissolve solid materials in septic systems, prosecutors said.

Erickson said the brothers need to serve prison time to reflect the seriousness of the crime and deter others from similar conduct.

“This was a crime of dishonesty,” Erickson said during Aaron Johnson’s sentencing, which was held first. “It defrauded the taxpayers of the United States.”

Erickson ordered the Johnsons, who farmed near Cooperstown, to pay back the government $932,776. The judge determined the government could prove fraud only for the 2006 growing season.

Both Somah Yarney, Aaron Johnson’s attorney, and Benjamin Thomas, Derek Johnson’s attorney, appealed for leniency based on their ability to pay restitution if they weren’t incarcerated and their value to their families and communities. Thomas said Derek Johnson lost his job, his house and may lose his wife and children because they now live in British Columbia and Johnson will likely be barred from returning to Canada.

“His punishment is real. And it has already occurred,” Thomas said.

Yarney noted that Aaron Johnson donated potatoes to schools, senior centers and churches to help Northwood recover from a 2007 tornado that wiped out much of the town. She said a sentence of probation would help his effort to pay back the government.

Yarney successfully argued that the government could not show illegal payments in 2002-05.

Thomas argued that Aaron Johnson was more culpable than Derek in the conspiracy. Aaron Johnson, Thomas said, made most of the decisions without Derek’s knowledge.

“If anything, Aaron was managing Derek in this enterprise,” Thomas said. “Derek was managing nobody.”

Both brothers asked to serve their sentences in Duluth, Minnesota.
