Wrongful Death EKU Forensic Psychologist Weighs In On Potential Indiana Serial Killer

Investigators in Indiana have arrested a possible serial killer.

43-year-old Darren Vann of Gary, Indiana has told investigators that he’s responsible for killing seven women over a span of two decades. Vann has even led police to some of the bodies.

EKU professor Dr. Dustin Wygant is a forensic psychologist who practices in Richmond and he says that cases like Vann’s are rare.

“These are not very often. When you look at the amount of murders that take place in this country and in Kentucky almost all of them are non-serial killer based,” says Dr. Wygant.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

One of the most well-known serial killers, Donald Harvey, also known as ‘The Angel of Death’, claims to have killed around 87 people throughout Kentucky and Ohio. Dr. Wygant says in his opinion, it’s unlikely Vann crossed state lines, but the number of his victims could increase.

“These crimes are obsessional. So, it’s something this guy has likely thought about every day,” says Dr. Wygant.

If there are more, it may not be long until police find out. According to Dr. Wygant, most serial killers want to talk about and even confess to crimes, just like Vann did.

“Based on what we know so far, he seems to be pretty cooperative. Everyone is describing him as cooperative and again these individuals like to talk about their offenses once they’re caught,” says Dr. Wygant.

Vann has been in police custody since Saturday and just like the rest of the country, Dr. Wygant says he will be waiting and watching how this case unfolds.

“People are inherently interested in this type of offender, we don’t know a lot about them, but when we do apprehend a serial killer, it’s important to get what data we can,” says Dr. Wygant.

As of now, Vann has only been charged in the murder of 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy.

The other victims have not been identified.

Drug Dog Sweep $26k Worth of Drugs Found in Canadian County, OK

One woman is behind bars after a canine detected $26,000 worth of drugs in her vehicle.

Canadian County officials say 34-year-old Latoya Wright of Greensboro, North Carolina was pulled over Sunday morning after making an unsafe lane change, moving left to right, cutting off a semi-tractor trailer.

Authorities say she was traveling from Phoenix to Greensboro.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

According to the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies became suspicious of Wright, they brought “Pickles” the canine to the scene.

After conducting a free-air sniff, the dog alerted officials to the presence of narcotics in the truck of the vehicle.

Deputies say they located 26 pounds of marijuana, worth approximately $26,000.

Authorities say the drugs had been swabbed with axle grease and baking soda in an attempt to mask the odor.

“My deputies did a great job recognizing that something other than just a traffic stop might be occurring, and took the contact to the next level.  A drug detector dog was called to the scene, and a positive alert lead to the recovery of the drugs, and Wright’s arrest,” said Randall Edwards from the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office. “The drugs we took in this case don’t appear to be the higher grade of marijuana known as “Hydro,” but of a lesser grade associated with that originating out of Mexico and sold in the United States by the Mexican Cartels.”

Wright was booked into the Canadian County Jail on charges of Trafficking Marijuana and Possession of Drug Proceeds.

Her bond was set at $105,000.

Private Detective: Man Says He Was Kidnapped, Forced To Participate In Burglary

A Frankfort man says he was held against his will by people he knew, who also forced him to participate in a burglary with them.

The alleged victim says Thomas Lee Wenz and Casey Endicott pulled a gun on him when he wanted them to take him back home. He then says a teenage girl and her two-year-old child went with the group to the burglary where the victim says he was forced to steal $3,000 worth of items.

The 21-year-old says his captors finally dropped him off early Sunday on East Main Street where he called for help.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

“The investigator that I spoke with says when he retold the story, several different times, that the story never changed. It seemed very plausible,” said Major Robert Warfel.

Wenz and Endicott are charged with burglary and unlawful transaction with a minor. Police say kidnapping charges are pending. As for the teen mom, she is still being investigated.

Private Detective: Ankle Monitor of House Arrest Escapee Found

Deputies in Laurel County say they’ve found the ankle monitor a hit-and-run suspect was wearing when he escaped house arrest three days ago, and now have evidence that he’s no longer in Kentucky.

Investigators continue searching for 47-year-old Terry Mullins who is accused of running over 17-year-old, R.J. Warren in early September as the teen was riding his bicycle on U.S. 25 toward his home.

According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Mullins was driving drunk when he hit the teen and took off, leaving the 17-year-old victim in a ditch off U.S. 25 near KY-2392.

Warren was badly hurt, though he is now out of the hospital and says he is doing better.

When deputies found the suspect two miles from the scene, they say the teen’s back pack was still stuck in the grill of Mullins’ van.

Mullins was on home incarceration and investigators say he went on the run around 3 p.m Friday. Yhey believe he took off on foot.

“On Saturday morning, we found his ankle bracelet in downtown Corbin. And we’ve checked with his acquaintances. They’ve told us they believe he could be somewhere in Ohio, unknown as to exactly where,” said deputy Gilbert Acciardo.

He described as being about 5-foot-9 tall, weighing about 150 pounds, and has a prosthetic left leg.

Investigators say it’s possible that Mullins could be under the influence of alcohol. If you have any information, contact the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

Missing Person Human Remains Found in Search for UVA Student

Searchers looking for missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham found human remains at an abandoned property in a rural area on Saturday, five weeks after she was last seen in the university town of Charlottesville, police said.

Authorities, who notified the girl’s parents of the grim discovery, must conduct forensic tests on the remains to determine the person’s identity, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo told a news conference.

The case has drawn national attention to the university town of Charlottesville in central Virginia and shaken the community.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Jesse Matthew Jr, 32, of Charlottesville who authorities say was the last person seen with Graham, has been charged in her disappearance. Graham, an 18-year-old sophomore, was last seen on Sept. 13 in Charlottesville.

The human remains were found by a Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office team combing through an abandoned property in a rural area of southern Albemarle County, and police called Graham’s parents to inform them, Longo told reporters in Charlottesville.

“These are human remains and forensic tests need to be conducted to determine the identification of those remains, but nonetheless we wanted to be quick and timely to share that information with the Graham family,” he said.

“Thousands of hours have been spent by literally hundreds of law enforcement and civilian volunteers in an effort to find Hannah. We think perhaps today proved their worth,” Longo said.

Matthew was arrested on Sept. 24 in a tent pitched on a beach outside of Galveston, Texas, about 1,100 miles away from the University of Virginia campus. The arrest came a day after a warrant was issued accusing him in connection with Graham’s disappearance. He has been extradited back to Virginia to face charges of abduction and intent to defile.

Police have also said forensic evidence links Matthew to the disappearance of female Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, whose body was found in 2010.

Matthew’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

Longo said police may not have further information to share on the case for a number of days.

Albemarle County Police Chief Steve Sellers asked members of the public to come forward if they are connected to the area where the remains were found and might have seen Matthew there after Graham went missing.

Wrongful Death Person of Interest in Custody As Bodies of 4 Woman Found

The bodies of three females were found in three separate locations overnight in Gary which could be related to a body found Friday night in Hammond, police say

According to Hammond Police, a woman was found unresponsive in a hotel in the 3800 block of 179th Street in Hammond Friday night. Detectives investigating the case followed a lead and took a person of interest into custody in Gary.

That woman has been identified as Afrika Hardy, 19. According to the Lake County Coroner, the manner of death was strangulation and her death was ruled a homicide.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Information from the person of interest lead police to three separate locations in Gary where bodies of females were discovered. Authorities say he confessed to murdering them.

First, the coroner was called to the 400 block of East 43rd Avenue. There they found the body of a black female wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans. The coroner says she was wearing three rings on her fingers and a belly ring. She has been identified as Anith Jones, 35, of Merrollville, Ind. Jones had been reported missing since Oct. 8.

Then in the 1800 block of East 19th Avenue, they found the body of a female. She was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Then – in the 2200 hundred block of Massachusetts Street, they found the body of another female – dressed in blue jeans and white Nike shoes.

Justin Jones lives next door to where the body was found in the 1800 block of East 19th Avenue.

“I came home probably 1:30 in the morning and the police were all over the block,” Jones said.

Jones says workers recently turned off utilities next door, and marked the house for demolition and the body must have been dumped since then.

“Somebody had to come in there like last week or something because NIPSCO and the water company was there turning the off the power and stuff, so it wasn’t no body in there,” Jones said.

The motive for all the killings is still under investigation. No charges have been filed yet.
