Identity Theft Man Files 116 False Tax Returns

A Cincinnati man faces 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000 after pleading guilty to two counts connected false federal tax returns.

Antoine Rogers, 35, pled guilty to one count of aggravated identity theft and to one count of theft of government property.

According to court documents, between June 2010 and November 2012, Rogers prepared and electronically filed approximately 116 false federal income tax returns.

A portion of the returns were filed without the taxpayer’s knowledge or consent, according to a criminal investigation by the Internal Revenue Service.

Rogers directed that the false income tax refunds be paid either by direct deposit into his bank accounts or onto prepaid debit cards that he controlled, according to the IRS.

The false income tax returns contained fraudulent items such as, Household Help Income and the American Opportunity Credit, which Rogers knew the taxpayers were not entitled to or had not received, according to the IRS.

From the 2009 through 2011 income tax years, IRS officials say Rogers caused an actual loss to the IRS in the amount of $408,535.

“Individuals who commit refund fraud and identity theft of this magnitude and with this degree of trickery, dishonesty and deceit, deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” said Kathy A. Enstrom, special Agent in charge, IRS Criminal Investigation, Cincinnati Field Office.

Private Investigator, Meth Lab Found in Richmond Motel

A Madison County motel was evacuated Wednesday morning after a meth lab was discovered in one of the rooms overnight.

Police say it appears a group of people rented out one motel room at the Bel Air on Lexington Road to house their meth-making operation. The group also rented out both neighboring rooms in what detectives suspect was an attempt to create a buffer between their operation and any other guests.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Firefighters were called out to the motel around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning on reports of a chemical smell. Once they arrived, they found seven people across three motel rooms contaminated by “hazardous materials,” firefighters said. Officials said there were several one-step meth labs in plain view inside a room.

Those people were taken to the hospital to be decontaminated, and then taken to be questioned by authorities. Meanwhile, others in the motel also had to be removed as firefighters began cleaning up the room where the meth lab had been set up.

“I don’t think they were actively cooking,” said Richmond Police Assistant Chief Bob Mott. “There were several reaction vessels that had been in there. Looks they had been cooking over a period of days at least, maybe even longer than that.”

Authorities say most of those who were decontaminated will likely be charged. No others staying at the motel were contaminated, say Richmond Police.

Anthony Debord, 44; Carolyn Eckler, 33 and Bobbi L. Evans, 30, were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine.

Douglas Pearson, 24 and Amber Dean, 21, were charged with complicity to manufacturing methamphetamine.

Fraud Investigation Telephone Scam Alert

Telephone Scam Alleging A Relative Is In A Financial Or Legal Crisis

The Internet Crime Complaint Center continues to receive reports of telephone scams involving calls that claim their “relative” is in a legal or financial crisis. These complaints are sometimes referred to as the “Grandparent Scam.” Scammers use scenarios that include claims of a relative being arrested or in a car accident in another country. Scammers often pose as the relative, create a sense of urgency and make a desperate plea for money to victims. It is not unusual for scammers to beg victims not to tell other family members about the situation.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

The scammers also impersonate third parties, such as an attorney, law enforcement officer, or some other type of official, such as a U.S. Embassy representative. Once potential victims appear to believe the caller’s story, they are provided instructions to wire money to an individual, often referred to as a bail bondsman, for their relative to be released.

Some complainants have reported the callers claimed to be from countries including, but not limited to: Canada, Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala, and Peru.

Callers often disguise themselves by using telephone numbers generated by free applications or by spoofing their numbers.

If you receive this type of call:

  • Resist the pressure to act quickly.
  • Verify the information before sending any money by attempting to contact your relative to determine whether or not the call is legitimate.
  • Never wire money based on a request made over the phone or in an e-mail, especially to an overseas location. Wiring money is like giving cash—once you send it, you cannot get it back.

Individuals who have fallen victim to this type of scam are encouraged to file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center, http://www.ic3.gov.
