Missing Person Stephanie Kazan of Levitown, NJ

Local police have done what they can. A local hospital is following federal regulations. However, it leaves one area mother questioning where her daughter is.

Stephanie Kazan, 27, of Levittown, last spoke to her mother, Sandy Birely, on Feb. 17.

“We talk on a daily basis,” explained Birely. “We talk once or twice a day by phone.”

Birely made sure her daughter could reach her by purchasing a telephone card, which she could use from anywhere. When the funds would run out, Birely replenished the card.

Despite a newly loaded phone card, Birely has not heard from Kazan since last month.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“I spoke with her and with her therapist,” she said. “They planned to deliver her here on Feb. 18.” When she did not arrive as planned, Birely spoke with staff members at Eagleville Hospital, the last known whereabouts of her child.

A therapist there, caring for Kazan, told Birely that additional state funding allowed her daughter to stay for an extra week.

“They changed [her homecoming] to Feb. 25,” she said. “I didn’t hear from anyone. I tried on Feb. 19, and didn’t hear from her.”

“They told me nothing,” said the concerned mother. “I’ve been calling and calling.”

Birely claims that one staff member even told her to “get therapy” and screamed at her.

“I have no information,” said Birely. “I don’t know what else to do.”

On Friday, Feb. 28, Kazan missed a court date, and her mother grew more and more worried.

“I went there to see if maybe the hospital dropped her off there,” Birely said. “But she did not show up.”

Birely said that her daughter had never had trouble with the law. After being left at the alter, she said, Kazan did suffer from bouts of depression. She was seeking psychiatric help for the depression at the area hospital, according to Birely. After speaking with a friend, the mother spoke with the Bucks County District Attorney’s office. They advised her to go to local police.

“I called Sgt. [Terrance] Kennedy,” she said, “ of the Lower Providence Police.”

Local authorities were able to assist Birely to find out that she was no longer at Eagleville, but could get no further information.

William C. Folks, director of counseling services and community relations at Eagleville Hospital, is a license clinical social worker. He said that it is a federal regulation that the hospital must follow in a case like this.

“It is actually a federal regulation regarding drug and alcohol use,” said Folks. “The regulation does not permit us to affirm or deny if someone has been a patient here with out written consent.”

Folks said that a patient would have to detail exactly who could know of their care.

“An individual has to sign for a specific individual for a specific purpose,” he said. “Without that consent, we’d be violating a federal regulation.”

Birely is concerned that, due to depression, her daughter may be a danger to herself.

“There are some exceptions,” explained Folks of the regulation. “But it has to deal with in the case of a medical emergency or an incapacitated person. Even then we can only provide information to a designated healthcare provider caring for that patient.”

With no luck at the hospital, Birely went on to file a missing persons with the Lower Providence Township Police Department When that is done, the police review the case and enter the person into a national database.

“We enter the person into the NCIC [National Crime Information Center] database,” explained LPPD Chief Francis A. Carroll. “If that person has any contact with police anywhere in the United States, it will indicate that they have been reported missing.”

If contact is made, police will notify LPPD of such contact. Carroll said in a case such as Kazan’s, it is more complicated.

“Because of a person’s age, anyone 18 or over is an adult, and it is easier when it is a juvenile,” he said. “We have to demonstrate some level or risk or danger. Unless someone is indicating wrongdoing or imminent danger, we decide on the level of the investigation.”

Carroll said each case is different when it comes to missing persons.

“The level of investigation depends on a number of factors involved in each case,” he said. In the case of Kazan, the department did in fact file her as a missing person in the NCIC database.

According to the FBI, as of Jan. 1, 2014, there were 84,136 persons in the database. Of the 1,810,409 entered into the system in 2013, 47,544 had been filed as “locates” or found individuals.

While she awaits information from police, Birely has taken to social media to pass along the information about her daughter in the hopes that the public might see her and recognize her.

“She left everything here,” she said of Kazan. “I have her dog, her baby blanket.”
With no wallet, no credit cards or even her social security card, Birely is worried about where Kazan could be.

Kazan is described as 5’10” around 148 pounds. She has long blondish red hair and blue eyes. She has a butterfly tattoo on her lower back and a “large lily” between her shoulders.

If you or anyone know you now sees or hears from Kazan, Birely asks that she calls her mother.

“I’m in bad health, and she knows that. It is not like her,” said Birely.

Sandy Birely can be reached at 267-767-7560. She asks that anyone with information contact her immediately. You may also reach LPPD at 610-539-5901.

Wrongful Death Man’s Deathbed Confession Could Help Solve Cold Case

A man who made a deathbed confession may have solved a cold case murder.

Last month, Larry Sherrard told his niece that he had killed two people just hours before he died and told her where a body could be buried.

Officials say a body found in the Saltpeter Cave in Hardin County back in 1989 could be linked to Sherrard; police still don’t know how it got there.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The Hardin County Sheriff’s Department has reopened the investigation and are now looking for other people who may have helped Sherrard pull off the killing.

The confession also led Elizabethtown police to dig up a yard on Railroad Avenue where he lived in the ’90s.

An excavation of the site found small pieces of bone, but no word on whether they are human.

Missing Person Search Continues for Camden, MS Toddler

Motorists driving down Mount Pilgrim Road in Camden on Thursday were stopped, and residents of the neighborhood received knocks on the door from law enforcement officers from a number of different agencies.

Authorities are asking residents and passers-by about missing toddler Myra Lewis, hoping someone knows something that might help locate the girl. A command center has been set up in a church parking lot down the road from the Lewis home, where officers can check in throughout the day.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

A specialized search team from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks did not return to the grounds surrounding her home on Thursday, but officials said a limited search team from other agencies did continue to scour the area.

So far, there is no clear reason as to why the search strategy has shifted from what seemed to be a ground search, but officials say the probe may have taken a new turn.

Authorities say the family has been cooperative in the investigation. Ericka and Gregory Lewis have publicly begged for Myra to come home. Gregory Lewis has publicly recounted searching for the child until his ATV stalled, and tracking her with the family dogs.

Neighbors wondered whether Myra might be with her biological father.

But officials would not address whether Lewis is Myra’s biological father or, if not, where her biological father is.

“I would have to tell you it’s an ongoing investigation, and we can’t comment on that,” Sheriff’s Department spokesman Heath Hall said.

There’s a lot of chatter going around, officials said. People all over the state seem eager to help find Myra. On Thursday alone, there were rumors she had been found in Flowood, in Pearl, on the Coast, in Yazoo City and nearby her house.

Sheriff Randy Tucker said officials are comfortable with the family’s story that Myra went missing between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday, but he won’t discuss why police weren’t called until 4 p.m. or what happened between the time Myra’s mother saw her outside the Lewis’ home and when the family realized she was gone.

The family told reporters they had searched for her themselves before calling authorities.

Authorities are also vague on the nature of the investigation. Media reports have called it a kidnapping investigation, but so far it has remained a missing person’s case.

Myra’s family told reporters they believed she was abducted and said their family dogs had picked up her scent at one point.

Tucker has implied the toddler could be alive somewhere.

“We fully expect a positive outcome,” he said. “We need to get Myra home, and again we want to stress to everyone we need your help, the family needs your help and we appreciate your calls.”

FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen said the feds have brought in several resources, including scientific and investigative personnel.

Officials are asking anyone who may have information to contact the sheriff’s department, the FBI or their local law enforcement agency with any details, no matter how small.

Wrongful Death Man Found Guilty of Killing KY Native Girlfriend in NYC Apartment

An ivy league law school graduate has been found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, a central Kentucky native, in their New York City apartment.

A New York City jury convicted 35-year-old Jason Bohn of first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, 27-year-old Danielle Thomas, who was found dead in June 2012, in a bathtub filled with ice.

Thomas had moved from Danville to NYC for college and was dating Bohn while she worked there as a financial analyst at WeightWatchers.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Officials say Thomas died of blunt force trauma to the neck and torso.

A voicemail from a phone call made the day of Thomas’ death was played at trial. Prosecutors said the recording was of the assault on Thomas and she’s heard begging for her life.

Court documents state Bohn acted in an “especially cruel and wanton manner” and intended to “torture” the victim.

Bohn’s lawyer claimed his client suffered from “extreme emotional disturbance.”

When Thomas’ body was found, police also discovered two handwritten notes.

According to the prosecutor, one read: “It was an accident, it was an accident, it was an accident … I had been drinking and I was drunk when I got home … She was already asleep … I woke up and there was fighting between us … When I woke up again she was unconscious … I am sorry.”

The other read: “Dani, I will love you forever.”

Deliberations reportedly took less than a full day and the jury on Wednesday, decided not to lessen Bohn’s conviction to manslaughter, but instead, to find him guilty of first-degree murder.

“I know that something good will come from this…I know that God has everything happen for a reason,” Thomas’ grandmother, Juanita Hardgrove, told LEX 18 back in 2012 when the incident happened.

Sentencing in the case is scheduled for April 2. Bohn faces up to life in prison without the possibility for parole.

Wrongful Death Scott County Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal DUI Crash

A Scott County man admitted to causing the death of his long-time friend and roommate in a DUI crash back in 2013.

Frank Lazarin pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and DUI in court Friday in a crash that killed Roger Daniels in January of 2013.

Lazarin accepted a plea deal instead of going to trial as he was scheduled to do later this month.

Police say Lazarin drove off the shoulder of Interstate 75 and into a guardrail, and Daniels – who was in the passenger seat and not wearing a seatbelt – hit the windshield on impact, and later died. Authorities told LEX 18 at the time that Lazarin was intoxicated, and possibly speeding.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Daniels’ family watched in tears as Lazarin accepted the plea deal and said they’re just glad this whole ordeal is finally coming to a close.

Lazarin will serve up to five years behind bars and pay restitution, but he remains out on bond and won’t begin his sentence until the summer, the judge said.

The two men lived together at a Georgetown home at the time.

Private Detective ‘Mummified’ Body Found in Garage in Pontiac, Mich.

A contractor working on a foreclosed home discovered a “mummified” body — believed to be that of the homeowner who had not been seen by neighbors for years — in the attached garage.

The body of the woman, who was in her 40s, was discovered Wednesday in the backseat of a Jeep, parked in the garage of a house on Savanna Drive, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Undersheriff Mike McCabe said investigators believe that the woman has been dead since at least 2008. That’s the same year the license plate on the Jeep expired.

“She had $54,000 in her account and her bills were being deducted,” McCabe said. “Eventually the money ran out and her house went into foreclosure.”

The undersheriff said neighbors told deputies they thought the woman had moved out of the country because they had not seen her for three or more years.

An autopsy showed there was no trauma to the body and a cause of death is pending, McCabe said.

McCabe said neighbors had complained that there was a hole in the roof of the home and that raccoons were getting in. The company that was managing the house for the mortgage holder sent a repair man to fix the roof.

“He went into the garage and saw the mummified remains in the backseat and called 911,” McCabe said.

McCabe said they believe they have identified some relatives on the East Coast, but he withheld the woman’s name until they could be notified.

McCabe said the electricity was still on in the house but moisture had caused black mold throughout the home. Detectives planned to wear firefighter protective suits to inspect the rest of the home, McCabe said.

Private Detective Counterfeit Traveler’s Checks Used in Fayette County

A nationwide counterfeit money ring has hit Kentucky.

Lexington Police are trying to track down those responsible for using several hundred dollars worth of fake traveler’s checks.

The Target store located in Hamburg as well as a grocery store nearby is just two of the many locations hit with the fake traveler’s checks and police believe there may be more than one suspect involved.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Fake American Express traveler’s checks have been popping up in cities across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and New York.

Detective Michael Helsby said Fayette County was hit by two suspects caught on surveillance at Target.

“The traveler’s checks were taken initially by the cashier,” he said. “The cashier then felt something was wrong and asked someone else to verify. At that point the second individual left the store and left his purchase on the counter.”

Helsby said the rare use of traveler’s checks makes it harder to spot a fake but these checks were more obvious lacking all common security features and using a diagonal background image as opposed to the correct parallel structure.

The suspects got away with $1,600 worth of gift cards and electronics from Target and two unnamed grocery stores.

Police are asking if you recognize the men in the surveillance photos to give them a call.

They also want to hear from store owners who may have seen similar traveler’s checks.
