Wrongful Death More Information on Double Murder Suicide

We are learning more about a double murder-suicide that stunned a Southeastern Kentucky community on Tuesday.

Police said a former Knox County Judge Executive, Raymond Curtis Smith, had been in a relationship with 21-year-old Robin Smith. Police said the relationship ended last month.

Currently investigators are looking into whether that’s why he went to her Bell County home Tuesday, shot her, killed her father Michael, and brother Mychael Dustin; then shot and killed himself at a cemetery in Flat Lick.

Raymond’s family told LEX 18 News that they wish they could turn back time so none of this ever happened, but now that it has, they are mourning all the lives lost.

“This was completely out of the blue, completely unexpected,” said Raymond’s brother. For the family of Raymond Curtis Smith, the magnitude of this tragedy still hasn’t sunk in.

“At first I thought that everybody was lying, the Raymond Curtis that I know, it’s hard to believe that he could do that,” said Raymond’s brother.

He said the Raymond he knew was kind, giving, and fun. Not the raymond who did this. “I can’t fathom it because he’s my big brother, and I can’t imagine that happening,” said Raymond’s brother.

Police said Raymond went to the Pineville home and opened fire. He wounded his former girlfriend, Robin Smith, and killed her father and brother. Investigators said he then went to a family cemetery in Knox County, and shot and killed himself.

Now Raymond’s family has no idea what he was thinking. “I don’t think we will ever really know what was going on in his mind,” said Raymond’s brother. Sadly two families will never be the same since this horrific tragedy. “Nothing good has come out of this, both sides have lost, both sides are suffering and both sides are in pain,” said Raymond’s brother.

Raymond’s family hopes a message from their hearts will comfort the other Smith family.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to them and hope that they will make it through this trying time the best way they possibly can… I just hope some kind of peace or something will eventually come to everybody,” said Raymond’s brother.

Friends of Robin said she is no longer in critical condition, but still has a long road ahead. The University of Tennessee Medical Center would not provide any information on Robin’s condition.

Identity Theft Georgetown Home Builder Convicted

A home builder from Georgetown, Kentucky was convicted by a federal jury of fraudulently obtaining more than a million dollars in loans from a Frankfort bank.

The jury convicted 59-year-old Lee C. Tevis on one count of bank fraud, three counts of false loan application, three counts of aiding and abetting bank embezzlement, and three counts of aggravated identity theft. Tevis was acquitted on a conspiracy count. The jury rendered the verdict Monday evening, after more than 15 hours of deliberation, following five days of trial.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Evidence at trial proved that, starting in 2006, Tevis began construction on a house and fraudulently obtained loans from American Founders Bank (AFB) by setting up bogus corporations in the names of other people to bypass loan limits.

The evidence further revealed that Tevis used some of the loan money, which the bank intended to be used to fund a home in Frankfort, to pay off his personal loans and debt on other construction projects.

According to trial testimony, when Tevis reached loan limits established by the Bank, he set up a bogus corporation in the name of his company’s foreman, an illegal alien, in order to obtain more loans. After fraudulently qualifying for the loans, Tevis used the social security number of the foreman’s 5-year-old son to pass the bank’s credit check.

Tevis fraudulently received $1.4 million in loans from the bank, according to the evidence at trial. The bank eventually foreclosed on the home that Tevis received the loans for and suffered a significant financial loss in the process.

Jim Tate, the AFB president who approved the loans for Tevis, previously pleaded guilty to bank fraud and will be sentenced on September 10.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation; and John E. Lucas, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Office of Inspector General jointly announced the conviction.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and the FDIC-OIG. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew Sparks and Jim Arehart represent the U.S. Attorney’s Office in this case.

Tevis will appear for sentencing on December 3. He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison. However, the court must consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the applicable federal statutes before imposing a sentence.

Wrongful Death Suspected Gang Member Claims He Killed Bardstown Officer

A suspected gang member arrested over the weekend in Nelson County claims he killed Bardstown Police Department officer Jason Ellis.

Deputies arrested Brant Sheckles, 24, after he and a group of people crashed a field party. Officials say the group showed up uninvited and assaulted several people. Witnesses reported hearing members of the group shouting “Big Money Bardstown Gang.”

Deputies say Sheckles threatened the arresting officer and then said he killed Officer Ellis. Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin told the Kentucky Standard he heard that Sheckles claimed to have “two murders under his belt” and publicly claimed responsibility for Ellis’ killing at Saturday’s party.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Sheckles, who is the nephew of Bardstown Mayor Bill Sheckles, was charged with menacing and terroristic threatening.

According to the Kentucky Standard, Sheckles also threatened arresting officers when they arrested him back on July 6 for disorderly conduct, alcohol intoxication, fleeing or evading police and terroristic threatening. According to the police report, “On the way to jail Sheckles made several threats to my life and comments involving Officer Ellis’ murder.”

Investigators say they looked into the gang early on since Ellis arrested three members before his death.

McCubbin said he thinks it’s all talk.

“I think this boils down to a bunch of punks, who are wannabes, who need to get a job and quit being leeches to society,” he said. “They’re trying to empower themselves by making that claim, intimidating people, and using the fear factor that ‘I’m so bad I killed a cop.'”

Officials say the sheriff has called a meeting of city and county members for Wednesday to focus efforts on the Bardstown Money Gang.

Ellis was gunned down in an apparent ambush along an onramp to the Bluegrass Parkway back on May 25

Identity Theft 7 Arrested in Glendale, CA

A bust on an identity theft and phony credit card manufacturing ring resulted in seven arrests Tuesday, Glendale police said.

“We literally could have thousands of victims here. That will result in, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses, but millions of dollars in losses,” said Sgt. Tom Lorenz, with the Glendale Police Department.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Authorities served search warrants and made the arrests at nine separate locations after a months-long investigation. But the search continues for three others in connection with the ring, police said.

Firearms, credit  cards, card skimmers and computer equipment were seized during the bust, police said.

In January, officers arrested a man after a traffic stop for possession of re-encoded credit cards. A search warrant was served at a business belonging to the man, and evidence of fake credit card manufacturing was seized, police said.

An investigation was launched, leading up to Tuesday’s arrests.

The Los Angeles Police Department, Orange and Los Angeles counties’ sheriff’s departments, California Attorney General’s Office and Secret Service assisted in the investigation.

Wrongful Death Former Know County Judge Executive Shooter in Double Murder-Suicide

Three people are dead and one is injured after a double murder-suicide in Southeastern Kentucky. The shooting rampage happened on Laurel Lakes Road in Bell County Tuesday morning.

Police said the man responsible, is former Knox County Judge Executive, Raymond Curtis Smith. Police said after Smith shot and killed two people and wounded another, he killed himself in a Flat Lick Cemetery near his father and his nephew’s graves.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The biggest question police are asking is why were 50-year-old Michael Smith, his son Mychael-Dustin, and daughter Robin all shot at their home? Robin is the only one who survived, and her friends said she knew Raymond Curtis Smith, who is not related to the other Smith family.

While questions remain, one thing is certain. Friends and relatives in two communities are stunned by what transpired.

“It absolutely devastated me, absolutely broke my heart,” said Krystal Coffie who is friends with Robin. People close to the victims still can’t believe the terror that unfolded Tuesday morning.

“Why would somebody want to hurt somebody like Robin? She just didn’t deserve it,” said Coffie.

Coffie’s mother, Marsha Stewart, spent years watching Robin grow up and could not fathom why the violence would happen. “What could have possessed him to do something like this? I mean was it greed? was it payback?” asked Stewart.

It’s not clear what possessed Raymond Curtis Smith to commit such a horrific attack. However, people who worked with him when he was a public official said it all seems surreal. One woman who used to work for Raymond Curtis Smith said he was not the type of person who could kill.

Now after this tragedy, people’s thoughts shift to the young woman who is fighting for her life.

“Everybody knows Robin, everybody loves Robin,” said Coffie.

“She loved her family and I can only imagine when she wakes up … She’s going to find out about her brother and her dad, it’s going to hurt her bad,” said Stewart.

Friends say despite the difficulties Robin will pull through. They said Robin was an MMA fighter in highschool, and an old school video shows her spirit. In the video Robin said, “I go into every fight thinking you are going to win regardless…. my family backs me up on anything I do.”

Although she lost part of that family Tuesday, the community is behind her, hoping for the best.

“Just pray for her and her family,” said Stewart.

Robin was air lifted to the University Medical Center in Tennessee. As of Tuesday night, there was no word on her condition.

Raymond Curtis Smith was a controversial figure in Knox County who had several run-ins with the law, including bid rigging allegations while he was in office.

He spent two and a half years in prison after he pleaded guilty in Federal Court to mail fraud. Prosecutors said he altered documents to hide that he was hiring his relatives to do public works projects. He was convicted of mail fraud for mailing the altered documents to the state auditor’s office while it was investigating the county’s spending.

Private Detective Attackers Using Skype and Other IM Apps to Spread Trojan

Users receiving shortened URLs in Skype instant messages, or similar IM platforms, should be wary of a new trojan, called Liftoh.

So far, it has primarily infected users in Latin America, said Rodrigo Calvo, a researcher at Symantec.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

When targeted, victims receive a message in Spanish containing a shortened URL. The messages appear as if they are coming from someone on the user’s Skype contact list who is linking to a photo. If clicked, the link redirects users to 4shared.com, which is hosting a URL, which initiates a weaponized zip file containing Liftoh. The trojan is capable of downloading additional malware.

The malicious URLs have been clicked on more than 170,000 times, according to Symantec.
