Wrongful Death Lexington Man Charged with Murder in Botched Carjacking

Lexington Police has charged a man with murder in connection with the death of a man who was assaulted during an attempted car theft on August 1.

The incident happened at about 2:20 p.m. on August 1 at the intersection of Sixth and Headley Avenue in reference to a female victim stating that she and four children had been kidnapped by the suspect, Joel Searcy, 31. Police say Searcy was driving her black SUV and struck another vehicle, while the victim and her children were passengers. Following the collision, police say Searcy stopped the vehicle at Sixth and Headley and fled on foot. At that time the victim and her children were able to escape.

A short time later, officers responded to a disorder at PDQ Market, located at New Circle and Meadow Lane. At that location, citizens had detained Searcy after he was allegedly observed pushing a senior citizen, identified as Donald Cooke, 82, of Lexington, from a truck and attempting to steal the vehicle.

Officers spoke with Cooke, who said Searcy entered in his truck near Broadway and Loudon and told him to drive. When they reached PDQ, police say Searcy attempted to rob the victim of the vehicle by assaulting him and taking the keys.

Cooke was taken to University of Kentucky hospital for treatment, and then to St. Joseph Hospital Main, where he succumbed to his injuries Saturday.

Identity Theft Defaulted Storage Unit Uncovers Scam

A Miami man who allegedly rented a storage unit under a false identity from West End Self Storage in Richmond, Va., is the lone suspect in a scam designed to defraud the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ramoth Jean, 33, was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Richmond last week and is charged with five counts of mail fraud, conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, access device fraud, and aggravated identity theft. He has pleaded not guilty.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

According to court documents, a group allegedly obtained personal-identification information from people who believed they were applying for jobs advertised online through sites like CareerBuilder.com and Snagajob.com. Using applicants’ information, the group filed phony tax returns via online tax services, such as TurboTax, that allow refunds to be sent as prepaid debit cards, investigators said. As of May, an initial investigation uncovered at least 133 suspected fake returns were filed in 2010 and 2011, seeking more than $700,000 in refunds.

The debit cards were sent to mailboxes in the Richmond area and quickly cashed in at ATMs. On Friday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael C. Moore told U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson that the ongoing investigation has revealed a minimum of 700 fraudulent tax returns.

Investigators became aware of the case only after Jean allegedly rented a storage unit and then failed to keep up with payments. Management at West End Self Storage alerted Henrico County police that someone was using identity theft to rent a unit. Police arrested Jean on Aug. 25, 2012, when they encountered him and a woman at the self-storage facility.

During a search of the suspect at the scene, police found a debit card with a different person’s name on it in his left shoe. Jean told investigators it belonged to his cousin. Police arrested Jean and seized a cardboard box the couple had removed from the unit. Jean was later released when investigators could not prove the debit card was stolen and a magistrate did not find probable cause to issue a warrant for credit card theft, according to the source.

Police were able to secure a warrant for the cardboard box, which contained tax documents and mail from the IRS and TurboTax to addresses in the Richmond area. It also included two laptop computers, a USB flash drive, CDs, prepaid debit cards and index cards with identity information for about 800 people in several states.

A subsequent warrant and search of the computers determined Jean had accessed them with the intent to steal identities for the purpose of filing electronic tax returns, according to court documents. After grand jury subpoenas were served using a sample of the debit cards, authorities found some of them were funded with income tax returns, according to the source.

Investigators do not have any other suspects in the case. A four-day jury trial for Jean is scheduled to begin on Sept. 30.

Insurance Fraud San Diego Woman Convicted

A San Diego woman who was caught carrying heavy boxes around while claiming that she was wheelchair-bound reportedly was sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay restitution this month for workers compensation fraud and other charges.

Yolandi Kohrumel, 35, reportedly broke her toe in 2002 while working for office supply retailer Staples Inc., according to KSWB-TV in San Diego. Ms. Kohrumel reportedly had surgery for her toe, but claimed she was unable to use crutches that were provided for her after the procedure.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Ms. Kohrumel was provided a manual wheelchair, and later was provided an electric wheelchair after she claimed the previous one gave her carpal tunnel syndrome, according to reports. She claimed to suffer numerous health conditions, including depression and hypersenstitive feet, that kept her in the chair for nine years.

Ms. Kohrumel’s 65-year-old father, Anton Buitendag, also participated in the scheme, claiming to provide Ms. Kohrumel with around-the-clock health care, according to reports. He sought payments of $324,000 from third-party administrator Esis Inc. and insurer American International Group Inc. for his services.

The father-daughter duo’s scheme was uncovered when movers saw Ms. Kohrumel get out of her chair and lift heavy boxes while moving into a bigger house that she had requested from AIG, reports say. She had asked for the larger space to accommodate her wheelchair.

During an investigation last month, authorities found more than 20 boxes of unused prescriptions that were provided to Ms. Kohrumel for her reported injuries and physical condition related to her 2002 work injury, reports say.

Ms. Kohrumel pleaded guilty to insurance fraud, while Mr. Buitendag pleaded guilty to attempted grand theft, reports say. The pair was ordered during their sentencing to repay $1.6 million to Esis.

Private Detective Pulaski County Man Indicted on Incest

An investigation by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the Grand Jury Indictment of a Science Hill man on a charge of incest.

In November 2012, the Sheriff’s Office received a report that a juvenile female had been the victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her step-father, Ronnie Logan. The report indicated the abuse had been ongoing for a number of years and had resulted in a child being fathered by Logan with his step-daughter. The child was born in April, 2010.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

A lengthy investigation was conducted by the Sheriff’s Office which included DNA testing to show the paternity of the child. That testing resulted in conclusive results showing Logan had fathered the child.

The results of the investigation were presented to the August session of the Pulaski County Grand Jury which returned an indictment against Logan.

Ronnie Lee Logan, 45, of Science Hill, has been arrested on the indictment and charged with incest – a class B felony. He is being held in the Pulaski County Detention Center under a $50,000 cash bond.

Missing Person Search Continues for Corbin Man

Two weeks have passed since Ricky Melton has been seen or heard from.

The 27-year old Corbin man was reported missing by family members on Friday, July 26, and they say there’s no word yet if he’s been found.

Melton lived in an apartment on Higgins Street, in the Gordon Hill neighborhood.

Kentucky State Police in London is working the missing person case, and on Friday, nothing new has happened.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“I talked with the investigating officer, Trooper Tony Dingess, and he said nobody’s heard from the man, and there are still no new leads. He was last seen by a neighbor and family members on July 26,” said Public Affairs Officer Trooper Lloyd Cochran.

Cochran added that Dingess is following all leads, and does not suspect foul play at this time.

Ricky’s twin brother, Jody Melton, confirmed July 26 as the last day they heard from him.

“My dad talked to him on the phone, and my wife talked to him on Facebook. He was definitely OK at the time. My wife asked him if everything was fine and Ricky said to her that it was. My younger brother went to his apartment a few days later and his car was there, all his clothes were there, one of his cell phones were there and everything looked okay. Nothing out of the ordinary,” Jody said.

On Wednesday, family members posted a $500 reward for information leading to where Ricky is. Jody confirmed Friday that the amount has now been raised to $1,500.

But for now, he admitted all the family can do is wait for word on his twin brother’s whereabouts.

“It’s a bad time. We’ve been hoping that he’ll show back up, and we know somebody’s got to know something about where he’s at. We’re begging for information. Information and prayers are all that we can go on right now,” he stated.

If you have any information about the whereabouts of Ricky Melton, call KSP-London at 606- 878-6622, or Jody Melton at 606-260-2929.
