Missing Person Oakland, CA Woman Still Missing

Family, friends and co-workers scoured through neighborhoods Wednesday looking for clues and alerting others on the disappearance of a Northern California woman who works as an investigator for the federal public defender’s office.

Sandra Coke has not been seen since leaving her home in Oakland on Sunday evening after reportedly telling her 15-year-old daughter she was meeting with someone who found her missing dog.

Coke said she would be back in 30 minutes. Her daughter called police when her mother did not return home that night.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

While police are treating Coke’s disappearance as a missing person’s case, her sister believes Coke may have possibly been involved in foul play.

“She is a loving and devoted mom whose family needs her desperately home,” Tanya Coke told KTVU-TV.

As an investigator Sandra Coke, 50, probes capital cases that are appealed to federal court to ensure death sentences are fair, said Joseph Schlesinger, chief of the death penalty appeals unit in the Federal Public Defender’s office in the Eastern District of California.

Schlesinger was among dozens of family, friends and current and former co-workers who canvassed and passed out fliers for more than three hours Wednesday afternoon in Oakland.

“There’s obviously quite a bit of concern, but people are still remaining optimistic and hoping for the best,” Schlesinger said.

Schlesinger said it would be unusual if her work and disappearance were related. Oakland police declined to comment if her disappearance may be work-related.

As part of her job, Coke, interviewed convicts and their families and acquaintances, sometimes traveling to other parts of the country and even internationally.

“She has a 15-year-old daughter who is the light of her life and is her number one concern,” Tanya Coke said. “My sister is about her daughter and work. She was not somebody who went out late at night.

“She’s just not like that to be out of touch. Ever. Ever.”

Schlesinger said he did not know of any threats against Coke.

“I’ve been doing this work a long time,” he said. “I’ve never heard of anyone being victimized in the course of representing people and carrying out these constitutional requirements.”

Oakland police reportedly found Coke’s 2007 Mini Cooper convertible near her home. Her two cellphones also have been recovered, her sister added.

Coke was believed to be in good mental and physical condition. Her dog, Ginny, apparently was abducted during a break-in at her home in May. Coke had been visiting pet shelters, canvassing neighborhoods and sending out fliers to locate the dog. Schlesinger said.

Her sister said someone had previously tried to extort money from Coke, falsely claiming they had her dog.

“Please, please know that this is a beloved person who needs to come home,” Tanya Coke said.

Schlesinger said it would be completely uncharacteristic for Coke to take off.

“She is completely dedicated to her work and a stable, responsible person with a teenage daughter who is at home,” said Schlesinger. “I am certain that she did not wander off.”

Drug Dog Sweep MN Brothers Arrested at Union Station

Two brothers were arrested during an undercover drug operation at the Amtrak train station in downtown.

On Tuesday, officers assigned to the Drugs and Vice Division were working a mission at 800 Northwest 6th Avenue, according to a probable cause affidavit prepared by Deputy District Attorney Shawn Overstreet.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

According to the prosecutor: the officers were dressed in plain clothes and asking people waiting to board a train for consent so a drug dog could sniff their bags.

As the officers neared the end of the line, Jonathan and Justin Williams quickly left and walked away, court documents state.

The two men are brothers.

Officers Scott Groshong and Chris Devlin approached the men and identified themselves as police. The officers asked Jonathan Williams if the drug dog could sniff the bags in their possession, court documents state.

Jonathan Williams complied and the dog indicated a positive alert for the presence of drugs, court documents state. That gave the officers probable cause to search the bag. When they searched Jonathan Williams’ bag, they located several vacuum sealed bags with a substance officers recognized as marijuana, court documents state.

Police asked Jonathan Williams to search the other bags in their possession where more sealed bags were found, court documents state.

Jonathan Williams was arrested and later told police that his brother “put me up to it,” court documents state. Jonathan Williams then changed his story and said it was a friend that “put me up to this,” court documents state.

Police later learned that the brothers were transporting the marijuana to Minnesota and they would get paid for it, records show.

Jonathan Williams told police that he believed he had about 20 pounds of marijuana with him. He consented to a search of his cell phone which revealed several text messages indicated that he was trafficking marijuana, officials said.

Justin Williams was arrested and told police that he was just dropping his brother off at the station and didn’t know that he had the drugs, court records show.

Officers searched Justin Williams’ cell phone and found several text messages to a contact known as “Michelle,” that detailed a marijuana operation including prices, locations, dates as well as plans for setting up a marijuana business in Portland, court documents state.

The total weight of the marijuana seized was 9,769.3 grams, or 21 pounds, Overstreet said.

Neither Justin nor Jonathan Williams provided a local address in Portland. Investigators believe that both live in Minnesota, Overstreet said.

Other text messages found on the phones indicate that both brothers travel extensively and didn’t have plans to stay in Portland.

The two brothers have been charged with one count each of unlawful manufacture of marijuana, unlawful possession of more than four ounces of marijuana and unlawful delivery of marijuana.

A court appointed defense attorney entered a not guilty plea on behalf of both men.

They are scheduled to be in court later this month.

Jonathan Williams has been released from jail on his own recognizance.

Justin Williams remains in custody at the Multnomah County Inverness Jail.

Wrongful Death Man Faces Second Murder Charge in Winchester

Murder suspect Lonnie Martin is facing new murder charges after Winchester Police linked him to the death of his cousin, Joseph B. Martin, in 1995.

Winchester Police Sgt. Tom Beall said he served the warrant on Martin, 39, in the Montgomery County Regional Jail Tuesday night, where he is being held on a murder charge for the death of Winchester resident Kyla Kline.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The new murder charges came from the investigation into Kline’s disappearance and death, Beall said.

Beall said police have a motive for Joseph Martin’s death, but would not discuss it. Lonnie Martin, of Stanton, had not confessed to his cousin’s death, Beall said.

Joseph B. Martin, 21, died Oct. 29, 1995, after he fell from the viaduct on Washington Street and was struck by a train. At the time, investigators did not have enough to charge anyone with the death, Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said.

There wasn’t enough evidence, Beall said.

Lonnie Martin has already served one prison sentence for an assault in Estill County in 1997. He was originally charged with first-degree rape, attempted murder and first-degree assault, but pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and was sentenced to 15 years. He was released after serving 10, police said.

Hall said the Kentucky State Police wanted to interview Lonnie Martin about some open investigations and missing person’s cases.

Lonnie Martin was charged July 28 with Kline’s death after her remains were unearthed on a Montgomery County farm. She was last seen in Winchester July 3. Her family filed a missing persons report three days later. Search dogs found the remains in a shallow grave beneath debris.

Lonnie Martin is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing in Montgomery County today for Kline’s death. Beall and Hall did not know when he would be arraigned in Clark County.

He is being held on a $1.5 million bond in Montgomery County and Clark District Judge Charles Hardin set a $1 million bond in the Clark County case.
