Wrongful Death Augusta, Maine Teen Killed by Asphyxiation

A 15-year-old girl police believe was lured to her death by a man using a phony Facebook profile died from asphyxiation, the state’s chief medical examiner said.

The official cause of Nichole Cable’s death was given Thursday as “asphyxia due to compression of the neck.” Authorities declined to elaborate.

The medical examiner, Dr. Margaret Greenwald, released the autopsy results after consulting with the state police crime lab, which has been reviewing evidence.

A 20-year-old man, Kyle Dube, faces charges of murder and kidnapping in Nichole’s death, which police say occurred on May 12.

Nichole was reported missing from her Glenburn home on May 13 by her mother, who said she had left the night before to meet a friend at the end of the driveway but hadn’t returned. Her body was found in woods in nearby Old Town days later.

Dube told his brother that he used Facebook to trick Nichole into leaving her house while he waited in the woods wearing a ski mask, state police said.

He told others he intended to abduct Nichole with the goal of returning later without the disguise to find her and to be hailed a hero, police said. Instead, he said, he put her in the back of a pickup and later discovered she was dead, police said.

Dozens of law enforcement officers, using aircraft and dogs, and hundreds of civilian volunteers spent days searching for the teen, whose friends described her as someone who was happy all the time and knew how to see the bright side of things.

Dube, of Orono, remained jailed Thursday. His lawyer, Stephen Smith, was out of town and was unavailable for comment, his office said.

Missing Person Mother Pleads for Info on Missing New York Baby

The mother of a 9-month-old New York baby who was last seen two weeks ago wearing only a diaper pleaded Thursday for someone to come forward with information.

“I would like to ask anybody that’s out there if you know where (Levon Wameling) is, or if he’s alive or dead, just please call the Utica police so I can put him to rest,” Amy Warney said at a news conference.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The baby’s father took two weeks to go to an attorney’s office then call police to report Levon’s disappearance, authorities said. Police said Thursday they are not satisfied with his explanation for waiting for so long.

“Based on the information that he’s given us, we have a lot of concern,” said Utica Police Chief Mark Williams.

He wouldn’t elaborate on why the father waited until his parents prompted him to report Levon missing.

“We have a problem with what he says,” Williams said. “There’s no question about it.”

The father told investigators he took the child out for a late-night walk and locked himself out, so he put the boy down on the small front porch to the home and went around back to find a way in.

When he opened the front door, he said, the baby was gone.

Guy Palmieri, the father’s landlord, said his tenant was frequently losing his keys and calling him for new ones.

The father hasn’t spoken with police since Tuesday, Williams said.

“The last we left it with the father he asked for an attorney and no longer wanted to speak with us,” he said.

Police haven’t called the father a suspect and no charges have been filed.

Sgt. Steve Hauck said his department was getting a lot of leads. He encouraged residents to give their yards a thorough check.

Levon has black hair, brown eyes and is 2-feet-tall, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s website.

Williams said the department is using dogs to look for Levon, but the search has been hampered by poor weather.

Wrongful Death Man Arrested After Girlfriend’s Body Found Under Bed

A 24-year-old man was in the Vista jail Friday, the day after police discovered his girlfriend’s body under a bed in their shared Oceanside home.

Officers found Edith Andrea Garcia, 21, about noon Thursday in a makeshift bedroom in the garage of the house on Leeward Court, south of Mesa Drive and east of Foussat Road, police said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

She appeared to have suffered from a knife injury, Sgt, Matt Christensen said in a news release Friday.

Police went to the home at the request of family members who had been unable to reach Garcia. They told police that Garcia’s boyfriend told them she had left following an argument, Christensen said.

Lt. Sean Marchand said Garcia’s stepfather told police he had not seen or heard from her since Tuesday night.

On Thursday, detectives questioned her boyfriend, Arturo Salazar, who confessed that he killed Garcia during an argument Wednesday, Christensen said.

Salazar was arrested on suspicion of murder and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Vista Superior Court.

The couple has two young children, but authorities do not know if they saw what happened to their mother. Christensen said the children are with their grandparents.

According to court documents obtained by LEX 18, Fannin said “she played no role whatsoever in the deaths…” and that she has information that would “enable the Commonwealth to prosecute [Willie] Blanton for causing the deaths of h

Private Detective Former FBI Fugitives Guilty of Multiple Charges

A native of Somalia and his son, a native of Kenya, who were fugitives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have pleaded guilty today and last week in United States District Court before Judge John G. Heyburn, II to multiple charges including conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, and lying to obtain federal aid, announced David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Abdalla Hajisufi, age 43, a naturalized citizen of the United States, having been born in Somalia, and living in Louisville, Kentucky, and his eldest son Mohamed Hajisufi, age 20, a naturalized citizen of the United States, having been born in Kenya, and living in Louisville, failed to appear in federal court for arraignment in June 2012 and were fugitives from the FBI until their arrest on January 28, 2013, by the FBI as they attempted to re-enter the United States on a flight from Europe at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

In court today and last week, both defendants pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute Oxycodone and Hydrocodone between November 2011 and March 2012, at various times, to customers at their business, the Hana Store, formerly located on Preston Highway in Louisville. Further, Abdalla Hajisufi pleaded guilty to managing and owning an unlicensed money transmitting business operating out of the Hana Store. According to the plea agreement, Hajisufi cashed payroll checks from employees of a temporary employment agency and would deduct a small fee for the transaction without complying with the licensing and registration requirements of Kentucky state laws. According to an FBI affidavit filed in support of a civil complaint, Hajisufi cashed nearly 107,000 payroll checks totaling over $6.6 million from July 2006 through December 2010 at the Hana Store.

Further, Abdalla Hajisufi pleaded guilty today to stealing $41,640 in food stamp benefits from the SNAP program, which administers food stamp benefits, from January 1, 2006 through May 31, 2011, and to stealing $20,196 in Section 8 housing benefits by misrepresenting his income on benefit application forms. Hajisufi agreed to pay $119,876.87 in restitution to the Kentucky food stamp program ($41,640); the local Jefferson County, Kentucky Section 8 program ($20,196); and the Kentucky Medicaid program ($58,040.87), stolen in the same manner as the Section 8 and food stamp benefits but uncharged as it was not discovered until after this indictment.

Hajisufi further agreed to the forfeiture of $25,008 in United States currency that was seized at his place of business, The Hana Store, during execution of the FBI search warrant on March 13, 2012.

According to the plea agreements, Mohamed Hajisufi faces a minimum term of 20 years in prison, a fine of $1,000,000, and a three-year term of supervised release. Abdalla Hajisufi faces a combined maximum term of 60 years in prison, a fine of $2,500,000, and a three year term of supervised release. Mohamed Hajisufi is scheduled for sentencing on September 3, 2013, at 3 p.m., in Louisville.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jason Snyder and is being investigated by the FBI, Internal Revenue Service, United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Missing Person No Sign of Texas Man

There is still no sign of Mitchell Dale Stehling, a 51-year-old Texas man who has been missing since Sunday at Mesa Verde National Park.

More than 50 searchers on foot and horseback initially scoured the Spruce Tree House Trail, Spruce Canyon Trail and Petroglyph Point Trail.

Dog teams attempted to hit on his scent, and a helicopter made regular passes over 2-square-mile search area.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

As of Thursday morning, 20 searchers remained, and the search will continue, said Betty Lieurance, a park information officer.

“I wouldn’t say we are scaling back; rather we are giving some of our staff a rest,” she said. “There is still no sign of him. We are going back over areas that are considered the highest probability for detections.”

Montezuma and La Plata county search and rescue volunteers have joined the effort, and a fresh dog team was brought in.

Stehling reportedly told his wife and parents he was going to visit Spruce Tree House late Sunday afternoon. The paved trail descends for a quarter mile to the ruin. Other trails, some off limits, branch out from there. He was not carrying water, or outdoor gear, and has not been seen or heard from since.

Park officials are convinced Stehling is still in the park, and they will continue searching for him. After four days, with temperaturs reaching 102 degrees in the canyons, searchers are cautiously optimistic.

“The longer it goes, the more you wonder,” Lieurance said. “Everyone is still hopeful he will be found alive.”

Stehling, of Goliad, Texas, near the Gulf Coast, was last seen wearing a brown shirt and hat, khaki shorts and hiking boots. He has military experience, according to the Victoria Advocate, a newspaper near Goliad.

“Staff, archaeologists, law enforcement – everyone is out pounding the trails looking for him. They will be expanding the search area if necessary,” Lieurance said.

Searchers are battling thick yucca, cactus, and pinon-juniper stands as they investigate the base of cliff faces, speculating the man may have fallen.

It was reported that Stehling does have a cellphone but it was not turned on. Cell service at Mesa Verde National Park is generally nonexistent, but there are some spotty areas near the road and higher points where a signal can be obtained.

Mesa Verde officials did not know whether the man had any backcountry experience or had medical issues. He was not carrying any overnight gear.

A backcountry gate near Spruce Tree House ruin offers access to Spruce Canyon and connects to a network of off-limit trails only available for special tours. There are stashes of survival gear, including water and food, at certain points.

The searchers followed up on some clues early on, following footprints, and finding a water bottle, but they turned out to be unrelated to the missing person, Lieurance said.

“It has been hot, and he is not accustomed to high altitudes,” she said.

Posters alerting visitors to the park about the missing man have been put up, and hikers are being advised to be on the lookout.

“It is pretty unusual for someone to be missing this long because the backcountry is off-limits,” Lieurance said. “Usually, they turn up in two to five hours or are found on closed trails by rangers.”

According to the Victoria Advocate newspaper in Texas, the family has high hopes that Stehling will be found safe.

Melissa Stehling told the newspaper that he comes from a military family and has the wits to survive.

“He’s probably already built a tree house and is waiting for rescuers to find him,” she said.

A post on Facebook by his daughter, Haley Stehling Wagner stated: “Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Please continue to pray for may dad that he is found safe soon.”
