Identity Theft 11 Arrested in Englewood, NJ

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of 11 individuals on May 3 who operated an identity theft ring that left more than 70 victims in mroe than 30 different towns with a loss of more than $150,000.

Thirteen police departments, including Englewood Police Department, took part in an identity theft task force in partnership with the “White Collar Crimes Units” of the prosecutor’s office.

Throughout 2012 and 2013, police received complaints that unknown individuals had applied for credit accounts under victims’ names for various institutions, including Comenity Bank, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Saks 5th Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, and Sears. The victims also received notice in the mail that “Authorized Buyers” were added to these new credit accounts.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Police were able to identify a connection between all the victims, who had recently refinanced or applied for mortgages at NJ Lenders Corporation, a mortgage brokerage company based in Little Falls. The company kept customer files in a Paterson warehouse called C. Marino Records, where warehouse employee and Paterson resident Kyle Davis would pick up records from NJ Lenders Corporation to store at the facility, said Molinelli.

The 48-year-old Davis would allegedly sell victim profiles for approximately $300 a piece to 32-year-old Paterson resident Shontera Jennings, said Molinelli. Jennings would then allegedly use the information to apply for credit card accounts and add “Authorized Buyers” to the accounts, which gave a “bust out crew,” or the remaining nine individuals arrested, the ability to purchase items utilizing an “account look-up” method and a proof of identification.

“Account lookup” does not require the use of the physical card to purchase items and instead allows a buyer to purchase items just by showing identification that they are an authorized buyer. This method allowed the crew to buy items before a physical card was issued and the victim became aware of the fake account, said Molinelli.

“Shontera Jennings uses that float time in between when the authorization is given by Macy’s for charges to be put onto that card to the time where [the victim] will get [the card],” said Molinelli.

The bust out crew, who would buy everything from pajamas and home goods, would sell these items on the streets of New York City. Since the items were sold on the streets, police were not able to track down the goods, said Molinelli.

“The bust out crew is pretty smart,” said Molinelli. “They know what sells easily on the streets of New York.”

Molinelli said knowledge of the identity theft cases were made possible by victims calling their local police departments. He urged members of the public to not just call their credit card companies when they experience a case of identity theft, but to let the police know so they can work on catching the perpetrators.

“When you get that credit card in the mail, I understand you’re going to call your bank and you will ultimately be successful in reversing [the charges], but let your police know,” said Molinelli.

Englewood Det. Capt. Timothy Torell referred all questions to the prosecutor’s office.

Missing Person Police Search for Missing Girl After Mother’s Body Found in Ottawa, KS

Authorities on Wednesday identified two men and a woman found slain on an eastern Kansas farm and continued searching for the woman’s 18-month-old daughter, who was last seen at the same property where the bodies were discovered.

Franklin County Sheriff Jeffrey Richards said at a news conference Wednesday that law enforcement officials were questioning a person of interest they located in Emporia, about 50 miles southwest of the Ottawa farm where the bodies were found earlier this week. Richards said no charges had been filed in the case.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

He said authorities also found a vehicle related to the investigation late Tuesday in Emporia, but would not say if the man they were questioning had been driving it.

The victims were identified as Kaylie Bailey, 21, of Olathe; Andrew A. Stout, 30, of Ottawa, and Steven E. White, 31, of Ottawa. Richards didn’t say how the victims were killed.

Meanwhile, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a release Wednesday that a suspect was in custody, but did not identify the person or say if it was the same person Franklin County authorities had been questioning Wednesday. Kyle Smith, KBI deputy director, did not return calls seeking clarification Wednesday.

The KBI also said it is seeking the public’s help in locating Bailey’s 18-month-old daughter, Lana Leigh Bailey, who was reported missing with her mother on Friday. Richards said the mother and baby were both last seen at the Ottawa farm, but did not say when.

The first body was found in the farm’s garage Monday by friends of Stout’s, who had gone to check on his pets because they had not heard from him for several days. They called police after finding Bailey’s body in the garage under a tarp.

Authorities then launched a full search with the help of several neighboring law enforcement agencies and found the other two bodies. Cadaver dogs were also brought in Tuesday to search the vast rural property, but no other bodies were found.

Kaylie Bailey’s grandmother, Wilma Pettijohn, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday that Kaylie and Lana Bailey lived with her and her husband, Andy Pettijohn, in Olathe. She said when authorities told the family Wednesday they had identified Kaylie Bailey’s body, they also said they had no information about the missing baby.

“We don’t know if the man who took the car took her with him or where she is now. … But they didn’t find Lana,” Pettijohn said.

She said the family has been “kind of preparing for the last day or two” for the news that Kaylie Bailey was among the three killed at the farm. Friends of Bailey’s have said she and Stout had a relationship and that on the day she disappeared, she had planned to drop her daughter off with Stout for the day.

Pettijohn described Lana as “cheerful and playful, strong-minded” and said the child’s mother was a “very sweet girl,” though she could be “somewhat naive maybe in the people she associated with sometimes.”

“She liked for people around her to get along, not fuss or say hateful things,” Pettijohn said of Bailey. “Just really loving and caring that way. She thought the world of her baby. She loved her dearly.”

Pettijohn said the family has a variety of nicknames for the missing baby, from “sunshine” to “sweetheart or darling or lovely little adjectives.” She said the family is hopeful the baby will be returned to them.

“Everything in the house reminds us of her,” Pettijohn said. “It’s just a lot of pain between here and OK.”

Wrongful Death 3 Bodies Found on Franklin County, KS Farm

Three bodies discovered on a Franklin County farm were identified Wednesday as a 21-year-old missing Olathe woman and two men with ties to the rural home there — all victims of homicide.

The bodies discovered Monday and Tuesday at 3197 Georgia Road, west of Ottawa, were those of Kaylie Kathleen Bailey, 21, Andrew Adam Stout, 31, and Steven Eugene White, 30, Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Meanwhile, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation is seeking help in finding Bailey’s 18-month-old child. However, an Amber Alert hasn’t been issued because it doesn’t meet the criteria, the KBI said.

Bailey and her daughter, Lana-Leigh Bailey, were last seen May 1 in Olathe.

The vehicle the two were last seen in was found about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Emporia Police Department.

Lana-Leigh is described as a 2-foot toddler who weighs 30 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes.

Stout and White, who lived at the farm home, have been missing since April 25.

Andy Pettijohn, of Olathe, told the Kansas City Star he received confirmation after 1 p.m. Wednesday that one of the bodies found on the farm near Pomona has been identified as his granddaughter, Bailey.

“We’re grieving for our granddaughter,” he told the Star. “And now we don’t know where our great-granddaughter is. She hasn’t been found dead or alive. We hope she’s found alive somewhere.”

Authorities said Wednesday morning they were interviewing someone in connection with the case, but no name was released.

Despite a KBI news release that stated one suspect was in custody, Franklin County authorities said as of Wednesday afternoon no one was in custody.

A Franklin County Sheriff’s Office news release Wednesday evening indicated the next scheduled media briefing will be 10 a.m. Thursday.

Two attempt to locate bulletins were issued Tuesday for Cyle M. Bailey, 23, and Kyle T. Flack, 27, in connection with the homicides.

Cyle Bailey spoke with authorities Tuesday and isn’t a suspect, officials said. Cyle Bailey has been reported to be the brother-in-law of Kaylie Bailey.

Flack in 2005 was convicted of attempted intentional aggravated murder in the second degree in Franklin County, according to records. The conviction stems from a shooting in Ottawa.

Flack was paroled in July 2009 in Osage County, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

Richards said a citizen called 911 on Monday and reported a deceased person was located at a residence in the 3100 block of Georgia Road in Pomona.

Sheriff’s deputies responded and found a dead adult. Additional personnel from the sheriff’s office, Ottawa Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol began an initial investigation. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office crime scene unit also responded to assist in processing the crime scene.

A second dead adult was located during a search of the residence at 3197 Georgia Road, about 10 miles west of Ottawa on K-68 highway.

The Major Case Squad, made up of officers from about 40 agencies, was activated Tuesday to assist the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

At 8 a.m. Tuesday, a third deceased adult was located inside the residence.

Canines from Kansas Search and Rescue began searching the area around the house about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. No more bodies were located.

The home belongs to Jackson and Karon Anderson, of Texas, according to the Franklin County appraiser’s website.

Kortni McGill, 22, on Tuesday said Kaylie Bailey had been seeing Stout.

McGill along with friends Corey Schlotzhauer, 26, and Shona Osladil, 22, found Bailey’s body Monday afternoon in a detached garage at the residence.

Bailey worked as a security officer for First Response Inc., according to her Facebook page. She graduated from Ottawa High in 2009 and attended Neosho County Community College.

Sasha Woods attended high school with Kaylie Bailey.

“She was amazing,” Woods said of her friend in high school. “Simply amazing.”

Woods also said Bailey was a good mother.

“We are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst,” Woods said.

Pomona Mayor Marie Seneca said the community is “concerned on two levels” — the loss of life and the fact that it is such a “violent crime.”

“It’s a small rural community where most of us still leave our doors unlocked,” Seneca said.

Anyone with information can call the Franklin County Crime Stoppers at (888) 311-TIPS or the M-Squad Leads Line at (785) 242-2561, ext. 417. Tips also can be sent via text to 274627 with the keyword “Franklin.”

Identity Theft FL Prison Guard Found Guilty of Stealing Inmate’s IDs

A former corrections officer at a South Florida state prison has pleaded guilty to stealing inmate identifying information for alleged use to commit tax fraud.

Bernard Beliard pleaded guilty Tuesday in Miami federal court to aggravated identity theft and access device fraud charges. The 27-year-old Beliard faces a maximum of 12 years in prison when he is sentenced in July.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Prosecutors say Beliard used his position at the South Florida Reception Center to gain access to lists containing personal information for 805 inmates from October until January. Beliard met four times with a confidential FBI informant who said he would buy the information for use in committing tax fraud.

Authorities say Beliard accepted $9,600 for the lists. He is no longer employed at the prison.

Fraud Investigation Phishing Attacks on Telecommunication Customers

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received numerous reports of phishing attacks targeting various telecommunication companies’ customers. Individuals receive automated telephone calls that claim to be from the victim’s telecommunication carrier. Victims are directed to a phishing site to receive a credit, discount, or prize ranging from $300 to $500.

The phishing site is a replica of one of the telecommunication carrier’s sites and requests the victims’ log-in credentials and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. Once victims enter their information, they are redirected to the telecommunication carrier’s actual website. The subject then makes changes to the customer’s account.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

The IC3 urges the public to be cautious of unsolicited telephone calls, e-mails and text messages, especially those promising some type of compensation for supplying account information. If you receive such an offer, verify it with the business associated with your account before supplying any information. Use the information supplied on your account statement to contact the business.

If you have fallen victim to this scam, immediately notify your telecommunication carrier and file a complaint with the IC3, http://www.ic3.gov/

Missing Person Kaylie Bailey and Daughter of Olathe, KS

Olathe police said on Tuesday that a missing person report was filed on Friday for Kaylie Bailey, 21, and her one-year-old daughter, Lana.

Bailey was last seen on Wednesday and hadn’t shown up for work, police said.

Also on Friday, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department was provided an address as a possible destination for Bailey.

On Monday, three bodies were discovered at a farm near Ottawa in Franklin County. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department said the victims are two men and a woman.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Olathe police said the case remains under investigation and did not comment if the 21-year-old is somehow related to the three bodies found in rural Franklin County.

Meanwhile, family and friends feel frustrated without answers.

“I’m very concerned for my granddaughter. There have been 3 bodies found and no child. Where is she? What’s happening to her? Who has her? I’m very concerned, said Rachel Helms-Bailey, Kaylie’s mother.

The missing baby, Lana Bailey, is 18-months old. Her grandmother says she has sandy, blonde hair.

“My fear is that she’s dead,” said Helms-Bailey. “I have no faith in humanity. I have no faith in the police department who could’ve put this Amber Alert out when they found the infant’s socks in the drive after they found the bodies.”

She said Kaylie lived with her for five years and never missed a day of work.

Another mother is equally worried about her son.

“I think he’s up they’re dead and they won’t tell anybody,” said Carla Fisher, Steve White’s mother. White is another Ottawa-area man who has not been seen since last week.

“There’s a lot of sick people out there in this world that would just do anything,” Fisher said.

If you have information about the investigation, police ask you to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS

Private Investigator McCreary County School Teacher Arrested for Bomb Threats

A McCreary County man has been arrested after he allegedly made threats in front of staff about making explosive devices and threatening an elementary school he works at.

Police say the teacher, James Paulson, 50, was upset the district will be letting a few teachers go next year (he wasn’t going to lose his job). He’s been charged with second-degree terroristic threatening. Police did not find any explosive devices at the school, Pine Knott Elementary, and did not find any explosives at Paulson’s house, either.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

However, police say there is evidence that Paulson visited websites that have instructions on how to make bombs, including pressure cooker bombs.

Bond has been denied for Paulson, who was deemed a danger to society in a bond hearing.

Paulson is being held in the Pulaski County Detention Center. His arraignment is set for May 16.
