Pedophile Tracking Child Sex Fugitive of Jenkings Township, PA Back in Custody

It took police three days, but officials finally caught a fugitive in Luzerne County who jumped bail before his child sex trial began. Clyde Tonkin, of Jenkins Township, is now in police custody. It turns out, he didn’t get very far when he escaped.

Clyde Tonkin of Jenkins Township tried to hide his face as he was brought into the Exeter Borough building. It was the end to an exhausting three-day search for the now convicted child sex criminal.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

“In three days, we had him tried, convicted, and in custody. So what more could you ask for?” said Exeter Police Sergeant Leonard Galli.

Tonkin was accused of getting a 14-year-old girl from Jenkins Township pregnant last year. When the girl was missing, police found Tonkin with the girl in Ohio. He was arrested in June.

After making bail, Tonkin was put on house arrest with a monitoring bracelet, but he removed the bracelet Monday morning. It was a move that had Jodi Miller, the mother of the victim, worried.

“Fear. What`s he going to do? Is going to go after her? Is he really going to really hurt her? Kill her or take her and disappear where no one will know what happened to her?” said Jodi Miller of Jenkins Township.

A judge held Tonkin’s trial without him. A jury convicted him on all charges on Tuesday after only eight minutes of deliberating. Officials didn’t find him until they received a tip call Thursday afternoon.

“He wanted information relative to his case, stating that he was railroaded by the police department, that he was railroaded by the district attorney`s office,” said Sgt. Galli.

Police said they set up an undercover sting outside this Turkey Hill in Exeter. Clyde Tonkin showed up thinking he was going to meet his bail bondsman. Instead, he was surrounded by cops.

“Now my daughter can sleep safe at night knowing her and her daughter will never have to worry about Clyde Tonkin ever again,” said Miller.

Police plan to file more charges against Tonkin in the next week for jumping his bail. He’s locked up in Luzerne County, waiting for his sentencing for the child sex charges.

Wrongful Death Body Found in Car in San Diego

Homicide detectives were called to an area of Kearny Mesa south of State Route 52 for a report of a suspicious death on Thursday.

San Diego police officers were in the 7700 block of Convoy Court following up on a missing persons case when they discovered a woman dead inside a parked Toyota Camry. Police said the body appeared to have sustained some suspicious trauma.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles and the SDPD, the car found at the scene is registered to Grace Ann Hall, 23. Police have not yet confirmed if the woman found inside the vehicle is the same person the car is registered to.

A bulletin issued on Wednesday by the San Diego Police Department identifies Hall as a missing person. It describes her as a white female, 5-foot-7, 150 pounds with blond hair and hazel eyes.

According to the SDPD bulletin, Hall was last seen around 8 p.m. on Mar. 20 driving a grey Toyota Camry in the 9100 block of Rebecca Avenue in Serra Mesa.

Hall was supposed to travel to Sherman Oaks in Los Angeles for a job interview. At the time the police bulletin was issued, investigators did not know if Hall had ever arrived in Sherman Oaks as planned.

Police say Hall’s credit card had been used in Mira Mesa since her disappearance, but hadn’t been used since Mar. 27.

As for the body discovered by police on Thursday, investigators have identified the victim, but have not yet released the woman’s name pending notification to her family.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, SDPD officials said. The medical examiner will determine the woman’s cause of death.

Homicide detectives and the ME were called to the scene Thursday to assist in the investigation. Officers cordoned off a section of the street where the car was found.

Arson Investigation Nyack, NY Teen Get 2 – 6 Years

A Nyack teenager has been sentenced to 2 to 6 years in state prison for an arson and theft spree that damaged cars, a business and several homes in the village last summer and frightened residents throughout the area.

Jonathan Barillas, 16, of 38 S. Franklin St., pleaded guilty to third-degree arson and has been sentenced by state Supreme Court Judge William A. Kelly in New City.

The incidents left Nyack residents asking why someone would go on a late-night arson spree in the village and sparked a house-to-house investigation by Orangetown police that led to the arrest of Barillas on Aug. 22, 2012.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

The arrest, indictment, guilty plea and sentencing came as a relief to Nyack volunteer firefighters, who remember the night last August when four cars were set on fire within a few blocks.

“When someone does something like that they graduate onto bigger things,” said Nyack Fire Department Chief James Weck. “Eventually, someone who does something like setting cars on fire doesn’t get the same thrill and they move up to someone’s business or residence.”

Weck said he thought the prison sentence was deserved for putting residents and volunteer firefighters at risk.

“Accidents happen. It’s one thing to help somone when there’s an accident,” Weck said. “But when you’re putting your neck out there and the fire was intentionally set, that takes it to a whole different level.”

Leading up to the fires, Orangetown police were investigating a series of thefts from parked cars in Nyack. Then came a fire at a business at 13 Catherine St., where the business was heavily damaged and a resident of an adjoining apartment had to be awakened and evacuated.

That fire was deemed suspicious. That fire was soon followed by a rash of fires within a few minutes of each other in the Summit Street area of Nyack.

Four cars were set on fire, damages the cars and damaging two homes as flames spread from the burning cars.

Barillas was accused of stealing items from the Catherine Street business. When he was arrested, Barillas was found with a credit card taken from the car of a Summit Street resident – whose home and care were heavily damaged by fire.

A Whitehall husband and wife have been arrested after the husband allegedly fondled a 16-year-old girl and the wife did not report the incident after witnessing it, police said.

Daniel T. LaRose, 57, of Broadway was charged with forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors, after police learned he had “unwanted sexual contact” with the teen at his home in March. He was acquainted with the girl.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Whitehall Police Chief Matt Dickinson said LaRose’s wife, Lynn M. LaRose, 56, interrupted the incident, but did not contact police or make a child abuse hotline report about it.

She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Dickinson said the allegations against Mr. LaaRose did not rise to the level of felony sexual abuse. He was arraigned and sent to Washington County Jail for lack of bail, while his wife was released pending prosecution.

Police asked that anyone with information in the case contact Whitehall Police Detective Frank Hunt at 499-1316.

Missing Person Piedmont, OK Man Missing After Oregon Camping

A 19-year-old man inspired by the movie “Into the Wild” to leave civilization and live off the land has gone missing, leaving his family in Piedmont to hope he escaped the fate of that story’s protagonist.

Dustin Self, 19, left Oklahoma a little more than a month ago for Oregon, where he planned to camp in secluded areas and experience nature by himself. His mother, Tammy Self, said Thursday no one has heard from him since March 16, shortly after he left.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“He took a cellphone, but there is no way he could call from that area,” Tammy Self said.

The owner of a gas station, cafe and motel near where Self went missing was the last person to report seeing him. He said Self asked for directions and said he was low on gas after getting turned around by his GPS.

A rancher found Self’s abandoned pickup Monday. It slid off a backcountry road on the north end of Steens Mountain in Harney County, Ore., and was stuck in a ditch.

Self’s keys, computer, GPS and some of his supplies were in the truck, but he was nowhere to be found.

His backpack and camping gear were not in the truck.

Plans to search for Self by air were canceled Thursday because of high winds, Harney County Sheriff Dave Glerup said. Heavy snow is also hampering search efforts.

Self graduated from Piedmont High School last year, Principal Todd Glasgow said. He wasn’t involved in sports or many extracurricular activities, but he earned his diploma and never caused trouble.

“He was social,” Glasgow said. “He had friends. It wasn’t like he was a loner here.”

Tammy Self said her son recently saw the movie “Into the Wild” — based on the true story of Christopher McCandless, a young man who leaves his normal life shortly after graduating college to live in the wild.
