Wrongful Death Body of San Jose Woman Identified

AROMAS — Police have identified the body of a woman found on a remote stretch of Cannon Road in Aromas Sept. 7 as Norife Herrera Jones, 29, a Filipino from San Jose.

Her death is being investigated by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department and the Monterey Police Department as a homicide, said Lt. Leslie Fry Sonné. Police later arrested Jones’ ex-husband, Lawrence Jones, 69, on suspicion of homicide.

San Benito County requested the assistance of the Monterey Police Department last week because they believed Jones had recently lived with Lawrence Jones of Monterey. The couple had been married about five years.

Lawrence Jones is a distinguished Naval Postgraduate School professor and internationally recognized financial expert, according to the Monterey Herald.

San Benito County detectives served a search warrant at Lawrence Jones’ residence on the 100 block of Spray Avenue on Sept. 13, shortly after 8 p.m. Evidence found at the scene led to the Monterey Police assuming jurisdiction of the homicide investigation, Sonné said.

Detectives from both agencies continued working through the night and were able to locate Jones in Los Angeles County. Jones was brought back to Monterey on Saturday and is now in Monterey County Jail. He has been charged with homicide.

Sonné said police have had contact with Jones in the past in the upscale neighborhood of Spray Avenue. Sonné could not comment on the nature of the police response.

Members of the Federal Bureau of Investigations Evidence Response Team are assisting with the forensic investigation.

An autopsy was performed but police are not commenting on how Norife Herrera Jones was killed.

“From the beginning, this has been a multi-jurisdiction investigation with Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and San Jose Police Department working with San Benito County before the investigation moved to Monterey,” Sonné said. “Detectives from San Benito County and Monterey Police will continue working together on the homicide investigation. This appears to be an interpersonal domestic homicide. We did seize a vehicle at the Spray Avenue residence.”
