NEWPORT — A 21-year-old Lexington woman was indicted Thursday in Campbell County for allegedly fatally shooting her boyfriend two months ago inside his Highland Heights condominium.
Shayna Hubers is charged with one count of murder. She will be arraigned Jan. 16 in Campbell Circuit Court.
Investigators said Hubers shot 29-year-old Ryan Poston, a lawyer in Cincinnati, from across his kitchen table. The detective said the gun was owned by Poston, an avid target shooter.

Poston’s stepfather Peter Carter and mother Lisa Carter, released a statement after the indictment.
“As families across our community prepare to gather during this very special time of year, the Poston and Carter families feel a heavy sadness knowing that we will never again celebrate Christmas with our beloved Ryan,” read the statement. “Our only solace is an unwavering confidence in our legal system and our strong belief that justice shall be served.”
Poston graduated from Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law in 2008.
In May, he had launched his own practice, focusing on personal injury cases. His friends and colleagues have described him as a bright, hard-working attorney who had a promising future.
Hubers remained at the county jail Thursday on no bond.
Her attorney, Wil Zevely, said his client acted in self defense. Hubers told authorities that she had been arguing with Poston and he had become verbally abusive.
Hubers earned a bachelor’s of science degree in psychology from the University of Kentucky last summer. She is enrolled in her first semester of graduate work at Eastern Kentucky University, seeking a master’s degree in school counseling.
Poston met Hubers during a visit to Lexington, according to friends. Poston’s family previously said the young lawyer was trying to end the relationship.
