The Etowah County District Attorney says a retired naval religious programs specialist has been convicted of sexually abusing a child.
District Attorney Jimmie Harp said Tuesday that William Hammond, of Southside, was convicted last week after the Court of Criminal Appeals reversed his conviction from February 2011.
The victim told investigators she was hired to babysit Hammond’s children and he began molesting her shortly after she started working for him. Harp says the molestation lasted for about six months when the girl was 15 years old.

Hammond was found guilty of rape, sodomy and sexual abuse. Harp says he faces up to 99 years or life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced in August.
