A Cottage Grove woman was sentenced to nearly five years in prison last week after pleading guilty to numerous charges stemming from her collection of more than $200,000 in Social Security benefits meant for a man in her care.
On Monday, May 6 of this year, Carel June Cody admitted in U.S. District Court that she schemed to keep benefits issued to John Arnold, who is believed to have died in her care in 1996. Cody pleaded guilty to charges of bank fraud, theft of government money and aggravated identity theft.

Cody pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud, 15 counts of theft of government funds and 16 counts of aggravated identity theft.
The plea deal reached by Cody stipulates that she repay $203,000 in restitution and a $5000 fine, in addition to forfeiting money in a savings account and her home. The money is due immediately, though Cody can make $50 monthly payments on any unpaid balance after her release from prison.
