Insurance Fraud Jonathon Roth Arraigned After Being Found in Ohio

The son of the man who faked his drowning at Jones Beach was arraigned and remanded without bail today for not showing up at his sentencing.
Jonathan Roth, 23, of Massapequa, was escorted back to the Nassau County Jail last night from Ohio.

Roth had pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges back in March and confessed to helping his father, Raymond Roth, fake his death as part of an insurance scam. Roth missed his sentencing last Friday and was tracked down by bail bondsmen from Empire Bail Bonds.

Roth told News 12 he was homeless and did not have money to get back to Long Island. He also said he wanted to be caught. Michelle Esquenazi, of Empire Bail Bonds, refutes that claim.

“He was not waiting for us to come get him,” she says. “He was absolutely 100 percent shocked that we were there, that we knew where he was.”

Before his disappearance, Roth had been facing minimal jail time, if any. His attorney hopes this incident won’t lead to a tougher sentence.

Roth is being held in jail until his next court appearance on Oct. 18. He is also wanted in Suffolk County. Prosecutors say there are bench warrants issued against him for harassing his ex-girlfriend.
