A man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s father and trying to break into the family’s home confessed to a Lexington judge Friday.
20-year-old Edgar Vieyra stood before the judge in a courtroom, and after a long pause…
“Yes, Your Honor,” he responded.
Vieyra entered an open plea of guilty to the murder of Lexington business man, Livrado Romero, and all other charges against him, meaning he is allowing the court to decide his sentence.

Vieyra’s lead lawyer, Tom Griffith, thinks the judge will be fair.
“I’ve always been impressed with [the judge’s] fairness. And we decided that putting it in her hands would lead to a just result for everyone involved,” he said.
If convicted, the penalty could range from a minimum of 20 years in prison up to, and including, the death penalty.
The Romero family says Vieyra was the estranged boyfriend of Romero’s daughter.
Last summer, police say in the early morning hours, Vieyra tried to break into Romero’s home, who tried to stop Vieyra from entering when he was shot by the young man. Romero’s son says his mother was also shot, but recovered in the hospital.
The Romero family sat by as Vieyra made his plea Friday, guilty to murder, assault in the first and second degree, burglary in the first degree, and a violation of a Kentucky domestic violence order.
“He was very nervous,” Griffith said. “He had a lot of questions, and I don’t blame him. It’s about as serious as it gets.”
