Private Detective Counterfeit Traveler’s Checks Used in Fayette County

A nationwide counterfeit money ring has hit Kentucky.

Lexington Police are trying to track down those responsible for using several hundred dollars worth of fake traveler’s checks.

The Target store located in Hamburg as well as a grocery store nearby is just two of the many locations hit with the fake traveler’s checks and police believe there may be more than one suspect involved.

Fake American Express traveler’s checks have been popping up in cities across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and New York.

Detective Michael Helsby said Fayette County was hit by two suspects caught on surveillance at Target.

“The traveler’s checks were taken initially by the cashier,” he said. “The cashier then felt something was wrong and asked someone else to verify. At that point the second individual left the store and left his purchase on the counter.”

Helsby said the rare use of traveler’s checks makes it harder to spot a fake but these checks were more obvious lacking all common security features and using a diagonal background image as opposed to the correct parallel structure.

The suspects got away with $1,600 worth of gift cards and electronics from Target and two unnamed grocery stores.

Police are asking if you recognize the men in the surveillance photos to give them a call.

They also want to hear from store owners who may have seen similar traveler’s checks.
