Authorities announced at a Thursday afternoon news conference that the uncle of Lloyd Lee Welch is a person of interest in the case of two sisters from Montgomery County, Md., who went missing nearly four decades ago.
Police have identified Richard Allen Welch Sr. as a person of interest. Montgomery County Police Assistant Chief Russ Hamill said Welch Sr. may have been a security guard in the Wheaton area in the 1970s. Police said he is alive and is connected to owning property in the Bedford County area.
Police are asking if anyone has any information about Welch Sr.’s employment during that time to contact them.

Sheila and Katherine Lyon went missing back on March 25, 1975. They left their home in Kensington and went to Wheaton Plaza for lunch at the Orange Bowl. They were seen at the mall by several people, including their older brother, and were last seen walking down a nearby street.
Earlier this year, Montgomery County police announced they identified a former carnival worker and drifter named Lloyd Lee Welch as a person of interest in this cold case. He is a convicted child sex offender serving time in a Delaware prison.
In September, authorities focused in on Bedford County, Va., and began searching property that was once owned by a relative of Welch on Taylor Mountain Road in Thaxton, which is located between Lynchburg and Roanoke. Authorities also said at the time that they are not only focusing on Welch in this case, but investigators are looking at his entire family as well.
Streets were closed down and large digging equipment were brought in. Montgomery County detectives drove more than four hours to join Bedford County sheriff’s deputies searching for the remains of two little girls.
Hamill said Thursday he thinks “there’s a good chance” the girls are on the mountain.
The commonwealth’s attorney for Bedford County said Thursday he has convened a multi-jurisdictional grand jury that will begin hearing testimony and evidence Friday morning in this case.
