Police arrested a man and woman from Pierre yesterday in a case that started with a report of possible identity theft. Police Captain Elton Blemaster says authorities were told around 5:20 p.m. yesterday by a Pierre resident in the 400 block of North Tyler that her credit card company had informed her that someone was trying to use her identity to obtain a credit card.

The company told the woman to call authorities and Blemaster says it was then that police began an investigation. He says the credit card company’s fraud department provided police with an IP and email address obtained from the person trying to apply for the credit card using another person’s information and identified a suspect. Blemaster says police came in contact late Tuesday with the woman they believed had committed the crime. Arrested in the parking lot of a Pierre business along Sioux Avenue was 26-year-old Katey McGruder. Blemaster says she admitted she obtained the victim’s date-of-birth and social security number and had applied for the credit card. She was arrested for Identity Theft, which is a Class 6 Felony. Also taken into custody was 26-year-old Christopher Quickbear-who was with McGruder at the time. Blemaster says Quickbear was arrested for Ingesting. Both were transported to the Hughes County Jail.
