It is often overlooked that natural disasters are just as traumatic for first responders as it is for those they serve.
Firefighters like Larry Hackworth, can’t just shake off what happened one week ago in his backyard. The memories of the deadly storm striking Johnson County remain fresh in his mind.
“We had no idea except to say it was severe that we were expecting heavy rain and hail,” said Hackworth.

These firefighters say non-traditional equipment, like boats and ATVs were vital in helping with the rescue. The last time these first responders saw anything close to this was the West Liberty tornado of 2012.
Now that the body of the last missing person has been recovered from the debris, firefighters with the Rockhouse Volunteer Fire Department are trying to find the owners of family photographs found during their search.
Every face is a victim of this devastating flood in someway. Now the hero responders are hoping to give back part of someone’s life that was taken away by the water.
