Wrongful Death Suspects Connected to Death of Richmond Officer Appear in Court

The three suspects charged in connection with the murder of Officer Daniel Ellis appeared in court Monday morning.

A fourth subject, charged in connection with the robbery that Ellis was investigating when he was shot also faced a judge.

Accused trigger man, Raleigh Sizemore, is charged with murder and robbery. Law enforcement officers from around the state lined the walls of the courtroom in Madison County where Sizemore’s bond was set at $2.5 million. The suspect appeared via video monitor from LaGrange where he is an inmate.

Sizemore is charged with murder of a police officer, two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, unlawful imprisonment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Richmond Police say Carl Banks was driving the getaway car during last Wednesday’s robbery of a customer at Main Street Gulf. Officials say Raleigh Sizemore tried to take a woman’s purse but she fought back. That’s when police say Sizemore jumped into Banks’ van and drove off.

Ellis and another officer tracked Sizemore to an apartment on Ballard Drive, where he was inside with two others, Gregory Ratliff and Rita Creech. Sizemore had said he was determined not to return to prison, according to a police report.

Police say Sizemore shot Ellis as soon as he began to cross the threshold of the bedroom door. The second officer returned fire and struck Sizemore, who was treated at the hospital and handed over to police.

Ratliff is charged with complicity and Creech is charged with robbery.

Ratliff, Creech and Banks are being held in the Madison County Detention Center. Sizemore is being held at LaGrange due to a parole violation
