Private Detective: Man Charged With Murder of Former UK Chef Fighting to Avoid Death Penalty

One of two men charged in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a former UK chef is now in court fighting to avoid the death penalty.

More than two years ago, Mark Taylor was arrested for the murder of Alex Johnson.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against him, but his attorneys are working to get that taken off of the table.

Taylor and a man named Timothy Ballard are accused of luring Johnson out to a car where he was beaten to death just a few days before Christmas in 2013.

Johnson’s body was found in a barrel in the Kentucky River weeks later.

Ballard was arrested first, charged with kidnapping and evidence tampering. Ballard is not facing the death penalty.

Taylor was on the run for several weeks after Johnson’s body was found and was ultimately arrested in a Texas border town.

Since then, he has been sitting in a Lexington jail cell.

His trial date is in June.

His next hearing will be March 11th, where he’ll be one step closer in finding out if he will face the death penalty if convicted for the murder.
