Private Detective: Crossing Guard Struck By Truck in Pulaski Co.

A southern Kentucky high school crossing guard is fighting for his life after he was hit by a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon.

“That’s crazy to believe that someone actually ran over a crossing guard at my high school that I went to,” said Brandon Mayfield, a former student at Southwestern High School.

The Pulaski County Emergency Management Director said it happened around 3 p.m. just before school let out, forcing school officials to delay the students’ release.

The man had critical injuries and had to be flown to a hospital in Tennessee, “there’s no way to miss somebody with a bright neon vest, there’s no way,” said Robert Lee, a concerned resident.

School employees said the man that was hit worked as a custodian at Southwestern High School and was on crossing guard duty at dismissal time.

But for Mayfield, whose grandmother is also a custodian at the school, he says he’s never questioned her safety until today, “when I first heard about it I had to call her and ask her about it because I was making sure that she was ok.”

Others, like Lee, are concerned because students from the elementary school across the street also use that crosswalk, ” there’s little kids that run around here they don’t know better they can run into the streets and get hit by a car.”

The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt but police are still trying to figure out why the accident happened.

No word yet if any charges will be filed against the driver.
