A gas pump skimmer was found at a Lexington gas station.
Employees at the Marathon on West Main Street say that they discovered the skimmer Tuesday afternoon.
Lexington police tell LEX 18 that skimmers have been a problem for about five years now.
Thieves use the skimmers to steal personal information at gas pumps.
This time, instead of placing the skimmer on the outside of the pump, the thieves used keys to get inside of the pump. Police say that the thieves possibly bought the key online.

The skimming devices were hidden from the public eye and employees didn’t notice them at first.
Lexington police say their Financial Crimes Unit will now contact banks to give them a heads up about the crime.
“We can notify those banks that the numbers have been copied down and the banks can put an alert it,” said Mike Helsby with the Financial Crimes Unit.
Lexington police say to always check and make sure that the security tape on the openings of the gas pump machines has not been compromised.
