Fraud Investigation Two People Scam Elderly Woman Out of Money

Police in Lexington are looking for a man and woman who scammed an elderly woman out of money in a grocery store parking lot.

Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department told LEX 18 that an 87-year-old woman claims a man approached her in the parking lot of the Bryan Station Road Kroger.

“And he said, ‘Ma’am, I found a wallet here with a large sum of cash in it,” said Det. Thomas.

Police say that the man and a woman talked the elderly woman into taking them to her bank to get out some smaller bills so they could split the money they claimed to have found.

The three stopped at a restaurant on the way to the bank. Surveillance footage of the couple was picked up there.

After going to the bank, police say that the man and woman ditched the victim after she handed over her cash.

Det. Thomas said that this is a reminder to watch out for those who might be more vulnerable.

“Just try to remind your loved ones, that hey, there are people that are out there all the time that are looking to victimize you because of your age and trying to take advantage of you, because they think you may not understand,” said Det. Thomas.
