Police say that a Clinton County man was left for dead when he was attacked and robbed.
Sheriff Jim Guffey said that most wouldn’t have survived what 77-year-old Bill Russell did.
“Our main priority was to save his life. We were in lifesaving mode,” Guffey recalled.
He says that on November 8, Lisa York and Danny Stearn called Russell to give them a ride. When he picked them up, investigators say that Stearns asked Russell to stop on Bell Camp Road so he could use the restroom. The Sheriff said that it was just a plot to get Russell out of the car so they could rob him and steal his vehicle.
“When Mr. Russell wouldn’t get out of the truck, Stearns grabbed him around the neck and started cutting him,” said Guffey.

Russell was stabbed so many times in his head and neck that Guffey said he believes Stearns was trying to kill the man.
Guffey said that Russell told him the only thing he could think to do was close his eyes and play dead.
Even though Russell was left for dead, he still managed to walk at least a mile to a friend’s house for help.
“I heard something say ‘Jerry can you help me?’ I said sure and there stood one of the bloodiest people I have ever seen,” said Jerry Jones.
Authorities say that back in the 80s, Stearns killed an elderly Tennessee man over about $10.
Police say that Stearns stole about $40 from Russell.
