Wrongful Death Police Search Breathitt Co. Pond for Evidence in Double Murder

A tip led police to the bottom of a pond in Breathitt County.

That’s where they are searching for evidence in the unsolved murders of Michael and Crystal Hufstetler. The couple from Michigan were found shot to death in a burned out car in Southwood in 2012.

The homeowners where the pond is located say police first arrived about 11:00 am, and told them they were looking for a gun in connection to a double murder.

Crews spent hours on a rainy day draining this pond behind a home off Redneck Road.

Emergency Management Director Chris Friley says state police were tipped off that some evidence in a 2012 Breathitt County double murder may be at the bottom of the pond.

So they borrowed pumps from the fire department to drain the water.

“We were using metal detectors and rakes just trying to sift thru the mud. But it was so soft, and you couldn’t take a step without sinking three feet in mud,” said Friley.

Friley says he isn’t sure if and when KSP will return to the pond to search.
