Private Investigator: Thief Breaks Into Cars Near Apartment Complex

Police are looking for a man behind some car break-ins in Lexington.

Police say that at least four cars were broken into either on Horseman’s Lane or in an apartment complex parking lot nearby.

“We had several in this area that night, and we had three with shattered windows in this case,” said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

One break-in left one man in a bad situation.

“The victim in this case had his wallet that he’d left in the car and the guy was able to get his wallet, a video camera, and he got some of his credit cards. And of course, in the middle of the night before this guy’s even awake yet, he’s out there using his credit cards, burning them up, stealing as much as he can on those credit cards,” said Detective Thomas.

The thief was caught on camera using the stolen cards at a business, which detectives say gives them something to work with.

Police often find themselves responding to car break-ins in that area.

“One, you have a lot of college kids in this general area, and they don’t leave their cars locked all the time; and two, you have a huge concentration of apartments in this small area, so they can cover a lot of ground on foot and get a lot of cars quickly,” said Detective Thomas.
