Fraud Investigation Suspect Died During Police Chase

Greensboro, NC– A woman that police tried to stop as part of a fraud investigation at a local bank is dead after crashing her car.

Greensboro Police said the woman was being investigated for possible fraud at the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU).

According to a police report, a SECU employee called them around 12:17 pm to report a possible felony involving the use of stolen identification to cash a check. The suspect was at the bank’s drive thru on Muirs Chapel Road.

The first patrol officer saw the suspect’s car in the parking lot, turned on his blue lights and attempted to stop the car. The officer reported that the car left the parking lot at a high speed heading northbound on Muirs Chapel Road. The patrol officer followed, still attempting to get the suspect to stop.

Investigators said during the pursuit, the driver lost control in a curve, ran off the roadway and hit multiple trees in the 600 block of Muirs Chapel Road. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

The passenger of the vehicle was transported by ambulance to Moses Cone Hospital. Her condition is listed as serious.

Police have not released the identity of the woman killed or the passenger.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

As is protocol, officers from the Greensboro Police Professional Standards Division are conducting an internal investigation to determine if proper procedures were followed in this incident.
