Identity Theft Malvern, Ark. Woman Pleads Guilty

A Malvern woman who tricked a lawyer into filing bankruptcy under another woman’s name and Social Security number so she could keep her car pleaded guilty in federal court Friday.

Calandra Lock appeared before U.S. District Judge Susan Hickey for her first court appearance late Friday morning in Texarkana’s downtown federal building. Lock pleaded guilty to a felony information charging her with misuse of a Social Security number. Her attorney was Anna Williams of the federal public defender’s office.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Assistant U.S. Attorney Claude Hawkins reviewed a factual basis for Lock’s plea during the hearing. Hawkins said Lock agreed to take over the car payments due on a friend’s vehicle so she could have the car. But Lock didn’t make the monthly payments, and the vehicle was repossessed by the note holder in Hot Springs.

In May, Lock pretended to be her friend, Jacinda Clegg, during a meeting with Pine Bluff lawyer David Morehead. As Clegg, Lock hired Morehead to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy using Clegg’s Social Security number. A Chapter 13 filing could result in a return of a repossessed car to the owner.

Hickey told Lock she could be ordered to pay restitution at sentencing. Lock appeared in court Friday on a summons, and Hawkins said the government is not in opposition to Lock’s release on a $5,000 unsecured appearance bond.

Hickey said she would normally order a defendant to have no contact with the victim in a criminal case, but she would forgo that order for Lock because she and Clegg are friends.

While court documents do not reflect Clegg’s credit rating, Lock’s failure to make Clegg’s car payments as agreed and the fraudulent bankruptcy filing under Clegg’s Social Security number could hurt Clegg’s credit rating as a form of identity theft.

Hickey told Lock that her case will be scheduled for sentencing once the court has received a report which will include a recommendation for punishment under federal guidelines. Lock faces up to five years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.

Fraud Investigation Wayne, NJ Accused of Writing $52K in Fraudulent Checks

A township woman was charged with forgery after police arrested her on warrants for allegedly writing $52,000 in bad checks in Wayne and Fairfield, police said.

Officer John Culic saw Debra Gonzalez, 43, driving on Wayne Valley High School property with a suspended driver’s license, said Detective Capt. Laurence Martin.

Gonzalez was under investigation and three warrants were out for her arrest for allegedly writing $52,000 in bad checks, Martin said, made out to a rental property on Parish Drive, a local tavern, and produce stands.

Detective Scott Rappaport investigated the allegations; Fairfield police notified him they were also investigating Gonzalez for writing fraudulent checks to auto repair shops, the captain said.

Several Wayne businesses filed complaints regarding Gonzalez through the municipal court’s Violations Bureau, police said.

Gonzalez was charged with fraud, issuing bad checks, and theft by deception. She was held on $20,000 bail, which family members posted using a bail bonds company, police said.

Police are also investigating Gonzalez for allegedly hindering apprehension using fraudulent documents, Martin said.

Rappaport is continuing to investigate the allegations of fraud and reaching out to other law enforcement agencies, police said.

Private Detective: Man Finds Human Remains While Fishing in Hart Co.

Investigators say that a man made a gruesome discovery while fishing Saturday.

“You’re expecting to go catch some small mouth bass and enjoy the river, and then all of a sudden you come up on something like that,” said George Bruton. Bruton and some other fisherman spotted an unusual tote bag on the edge of the Green River, about a quarter of a mile from the H.H. Wilson Park in Hart County.

They found human remains in the tote.

“I took my gaffe that I use to pull fish in and I reached and hooked the tote and kind of flipped it over. I actually cut it a little bit more so I could see further into it. And when I did, you could see a hand,” said Bruton.

The family of missing woman Whitney Copley says that the news of this discovery creates hope for them. The 25-year-old mother of two disappeared last September. She was last seen in the Dunnville area on the Casey/Adair County line.

The remains have not been identified, but Copley’s family is staying in touch with police about it.
