Arson Investigation Family Believes Arson Caused Early Morning Fire

Lexington fire crews battled an early morning fire near downtown on Wednesday morning.  Now the homeowner believes that someone in his own family is responsible.

The fire broke out at a home on Maryland Ave. The affected area was a detached garage on the back side of the home. Two cars and tons of personal mementos were destroyed.

The call came in to dispatch at around 4 a.m. Flames were shooting from the garage and neighbors say sirens and loud noises woke them up. Luckily, the damage is contained to just the garage and did not spread to the.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

The 81-year-old homeowner told LEX 18  that he used to own a car lot and there are multiple cars all over the property and that two of them were destroyed, along with precious mementos from his daughter’s deceased husband.

Neighbors saw a man running from the garage before the fire started. The homeowner immediately suspected his nephew, who had lived in the garage with a female friend.

The homeowner says that his nephew had recently been asked to leave because of the amount of money he owes. He lives on a fixed income and because of that he likely will not rebuild.  His daughter told LEX 18 that the hardest part is knowing the countless pictures and mementos that were destroyed in the fire can never be replaced.

“You feel like you wanna give up but you can’t. Because the good Lord is above and we know there’s a reason for everything. But it doesn’t make it you feel any better at this point,” Cara Harris told LEX 18’s Claire Crouch.

Fire investigators are collecting evidence at the scene.

One year later, her family is not any closer to finding Crystal.

Private Detective: Police Looking For Couple Who Stole From Pandora

Lexington police say that they are looking for a man and a woman in connection with a jewelry store theft.

They say that thousands of dollars in jewelry was stolen.

Police believe the couple may have initially walked into Pandora in Fayette Mall to do some shopping, but then their plans changed.

“I think this in particular was a target of opportunity.  I think he went in and saw this set of keys and just grabbed them, and then went about forming a plan,” said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Detectives say that the man took some keys that were left out and then he and the woman left the store.

“Twenty minutes later, you can see them reenter the store, and they really take their time.  I mean, they’re in the store about 40 minutes.  But when they first come back in, the female goes to immediately distract one of the clerks.  And then you can see how brazen this guy is.  He just keys right in to one of the cabinets, pulls out an entire tray of rings, and dumps them into an express bag,” said Thomas.

The rings total about $20,000 in value.

Police say that the man even tried opening other cabinets with the key, but it didn’t work.

Police want anyone who might recognize the couple to let them know.

If you have any information on the stolen jewelry floating around internet sites where it could be sold, let Lexington police know.

“With the quick and the ease of this guy palming that set of keys, and the way they went about this, distracting the clerk, there’s no doubt in my mind that this man or this woman have a criminal history, absolutely no doubt,” said Thomas.

If you can help police, Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

You can call in your tip at (859) 253- 2020. You can also text your tip to ‘CRIMES.’  In the text message, type LEX P-D and then your tip.

Private Detective: Couple Steals Man’s Life Savings After He’s Diagnosed With Lou Gehrig’s Disease

The community is coming together to try and help a Clark County man fighting a devastating illness whose life savings was stolen from people he thought were close friends.

“I just let them get too close,” is what Johnny Burgess told LEX 18’s Hayley Harmon about the two people he says stole his life savings.

Back in May, Burgess received the life-changing news that he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

“It’s not curable,” he explained. “They got a little medicine that’s supposed to slow it down.”

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

The 53-year-old decided to sell everything to pay for his funeral expenses and to take one last dream vacation.

“I sold every tool, every truck. I had a Bobcat. I had a dumptruck,” said Burgess.

After the nearly $30,000 he’d compiled was stolen, he realized the possibility of going on his dream vacation was stolen too.

Burgess said he came home last Thursday to find the money gone. He says only two other people in the world knew about this money and those were two people he’d called “friends” for nearly eight years.

He says they were a young couple who had been his rock following his diagnosis. He believes they unlocked his back door when they came over for a visit and then stole his life savings while he was out.

Burgess says that the couple texted him about 15 times while he was out that day, asking him how long he was going to be and if he needed help.

“Oh Lord. It killed me,” said Burgess. “At first I wanted to get a gun and get revenge. But I got to thinking, I ain’t got much life anyway.”

He says he tried to reach out to the couple, but they have changed their phone numbers and left town.

Burgess filed a report with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and they’re looking into the case at this time.

There will be a ‘Cruise In & Car Wash Benefit’ to help raise money for Burgess.

It will be on July 16th at the Car Mart on Bypass Road in Winchester from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

You can get your car washed or enter one it the car show. The entry fee is $20.

The event is sponsored by ‘Remember When Cruizers.’
