Private Detective: Montgomery County Man Arrested in Shotgun Robbery

The Montgomery County sheriff says tips from the community led to the arrest of a man accused of robbing a gas station with a shotgun back in May.

Deputies arrested 39-year-old Benjiman Basye in connection with the robbery at the Be Quick Sonoco.

Several people claimed the tattoos in surveillance pictures matched those on Basye. He confessed to the crime and said he used his roommate’s gun, deputies said.

The business wasn’t even open for ten minutes on May 17 when the man ran in with his shotgun pointed right at the female clerk trying to hide his face by wearing a bandana.

As seen in surveillance video, he never put the weapon down, keeping the pistol grip shotgun barrel just inches from the clerk who was understandably scared – so much she didn’t act fast enough for him.

“His voice did escalate somewhat because she hesitated when he demanded money the first time,” said Sheriff Fred Shortride. “He made some kind of statement…’hey look, I’m not joking. Give me your money’.”

Basye is scheduled to be in court next week.
