Private Detective Lexington Police Search for Suspect Who Stole Van

Police say a crook has taken off with a van used to train those who can’t walk to drive, and now the company needs your help to find it.

LEX 18 was told the theft happened sometime Tuesday or Wednesday at Superior Van and Mobility on New Circle Road. The van has specialized equipment for someone to steer and control the gas and brake with their hands while sitting in their wheelchair.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

One worker says the crime is a real low blow. “Why would somebody want to steal something that helps somebody so much?” said John Jarrell. “It doesn’t make any sense really.”

The van and equipment inside are worth at least $150,000. If you have any information about what happened, call Lexington Police.

Missing Person Search Continues for Dylan Redwine in Vallecito, CO

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to search for a 13-year-old Four Corners boy missing since Monday.

Dylan Redwine was reported missing Monday afternoon by his father, Mark Redwine, who lives in Vallecito, about 22 miles northeast of Durango.

Dylan, who lived in Colorado Springs with his mother and brother, was staying at his father’s house since Sunday as part of a court ordered Thanksgiving holiday visitation.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Dylan was last seen at his father’s house by his father at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday. He was gone when his father returned to the house at about 11:30 a.m., after running some errands in town.

Dylan is described as 13 years old, standing 5 feet tall and weighing 105 pounds. He has blond hair and blue eyes.

It is not known what clothing he may be wearing, but he may have a black backpack with him.

Members of La Plata County Search & Rescue searched for Dylan Monday night and all day Tuesday, using ground search teams and search dogs.

The search area includes the shoreline around Vallecito Lake, several small subdivisions, two county roads, steep wooded hillsides and hiking trails.

Many of the homes in the area are seasonal, while some are occupied year around.

A resident who knows Dylan reported seeing him walking along County Road 501 in Vallecito Monday afternoon with another boy about the same age. Both had backpacks. The resident was not aware Dylan had been reported missing until Tuesday.

Sheriff’s Office investigators are interviewing family members and other people who know Dylan.

The Sheriff’s Office is not ruling out the possibility of an abduction but are also exploring the possibility that Dylan may be a runaway. Some family members indicated Dylan may not have been in favor of the court ordered visit this week. Dylan lived and attended school for years in the area and is known by many people.

Both parents are cooperating with investigators. Search & Rescue personnel are on stand-by today (Wednesday) in case new leads are developed that could direct them to new search areas.

Investigators are also retracing Dylan’s route from Colorado Springs to Durango and places he may have visited after his arrival.

Anyone who may have information on Dylan’s whereabouts are asked to contact La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Investigators Dan Patterson (970-382-7015) or Tom Cowing (970-382-7045).

Pedophile Tracking Elsmere, KY Man Sentenced

COVINGTON, KY—An Elsmere, Kentucky man was sentenced today to 14 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography over the Internet.

U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning sentenced 24-year-old Preston Warner for distribution of child pornography. Judge Bunning ordered Warner to be on supervised release for 20 years following the completion of his prison term. Warner will also have to register as a sex offender for life.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Court documents show that in June 2010, Warner distributed images of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Some of the child pornography images showed children who were under the age of 12, while other images were sadistic and violent in nature.

The investigation started when an FBI agent in Florida identified child pornography images that were available for download over an Internet file sharing network. The agent traced the images back to Warner’s computer. The FBI executed a search warrant on Warner’s Elsmere home and located thousands of child pornography images on his computer.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, jointly made the announcement today.

The case was investigated by the FBI. The U.S. Government was represented by the Fort Mitchell Branch Office of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Warner must serve at least 85 percent of his prison sentence.

Identity Theft Tips for Black Friday

With an estimated 147 million people shopping this weekend for Black Friday deals from Furbys to flat-screen televisions, thieves will have plenty of targets.

Some say a symbol on credit cards, half-circles indicating a radio-frequency identification microchip, will put customers at risk of identity theft, but most experts say traditional theft is more likely.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts found that anyone with a scanner could steal a credit card’s information, like a virtual pickpocket if the card contained a microchip that allows consumers to wave their card near a scanner instead of swiping it or handing it to a cashier.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Some companies jumped on board, marketing wallets and purses that block clandestine credit card scanners.

“They do make certain wallets or purses that trap the signal so they just can’t be scanned,” Heath police Sgt. Craig Black said.

However, Nikki Junker, social media manager at the Identity Theft Resource Center, said thieves would have a difficult time using the scanned information to make fraudulent transactions because of safety features in credit cards.

“In our opinion, it’s not something you have to worry about,” she said.

Several police departments had no reports of this type of theft.

Consumers should be more concerned about keeping an eye on their credit cards, wallets and purses, Marion police Major Randy Caryer said. It’s easy to lose track of those items in crowds or at restaurants, he said.

Customers can minimize their risk of credit card theft by carrying only the cards needed for that shopping trip and leaving social security cards at home, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office advised.

Junker suggested using a credit card for Black Friday shopping rather than a debit card because federal law places a $50 cap on how much a victim must pay for unauthorized purchases.

Compensation for loss on debit and ATM cards depends on how quickly the card holder reports the unauthorized use, the Federal Trade Commission reported.

“(The banks) are trying to get their money back; they might take a little bit more time to get your money back,” Junker said.

Junker also advised shoppers to be wary of public wireless networks, especially if their smart phones and tablets do not have anti-virus software. This holds true even if the store has a password for customers to access WiFi, she said.

“It’s incredibly unsafe,” Junker said. “Everyone in the coffee shop is on the same network.”

Consumers can avoid Cyber Monday scams by sticking to websites of brick and mortar stores and reliable online merchandisers. Be sure to check the URLs, because missing a letter might send you to a spoofed site set up by criminals, Junker said.

Even as cyber criminals become more savvy, it still is important to watch out for in-person scams, Zanesville police Lt. Bill Shaw said.

Lancaster police Lt. Greg Seesholtz advised shoppers not to leave their purses and wallets on the front seat, even if the items are covered by a jacket.

Most safety tips are common sense, but people disregard them because they don’t believe they will be victims. People should park in well lighted areas, lock their doors when not present, and never leave items out in plain view, Seesholtz said.

In Zanesville, the most common form of identity theft is elderly people trusting caregivers with credit cards and check books, Shaw said. It’s not technologically advanced, but the effect is the same, he said.

A good rule of thumb: “If it sounds too good to be true, it typically is,” Junker said.

Missing Person 3 Boys Missing Since Thanksgiving 2010

MORENCI, Mich. — The investigation into the case of three Michigan boys missing since Thanksgiving 2010 remains “active” ahead of the second anniversary of their disappearance, police said Tuesday.

Police in Morenci, however, said that they still believe the boys are dead and their father disposed of their bodies. John Skelton pleaded no contest last year to charges of unlawful imprisonment, but he maintains that he didn’t harm the children.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The boys were last seen at Skelton’s home in Morenci, which is near the Michigan-Ohio border. Skelton didn’t return them to their mother, setting off a search that involved hundreds of volunteers in both states.

Skelton told police he handed the boys over to a group he didn’t identify to protect them from their mother.

“His choice to hide behind this outlandish story is selfish and cowardly,” Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said in a statement. “If he cared about his sons at all he would disclose the truth and bring resolution to this case.”

Investigators said they have received about 1,300 tips and continue to seek more, and a $60,000 reward is being offered. In the statement, police said: “The investigation remains active and at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers.”

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children created age-progressed photos of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton. The Skelton brothers were 9, 7, and 5 years old, respectively, when they last were seen.

Missing Person Patricia Osberg (78) of Glade Park, CO

GLADE PARK, Colo. – Search and rescue crews are still combing miles of open space in Glade Park after a woman went missing Thursday morning.

Patricia Osberg, 78, who suffers from Alzheimers, walked away from her home at 4890 Red Bluff Road around 9:30 a.m. and hasn’t been seen since.

Her husband, Allen, called authorities with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office at 10:10 a.m. and crews were on scene within an hour, searching for Patricia without any luck.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

NewsChannel 5 went to the base of the search operations and spoke exclusively with Allen Osberg who says due to his wife’s condition, she has gone missing during walks before but was always found very quickly.

The two were inside their Glade Park home this morning before they planned to head to their daughters house for Thanksgiving dinner.

Allen says he was working on some bills when he realized the house was a little too quiet.

“I went out to the kitchen and she was gone. No place in the house. So I got into my vehicle and started driving the roads,” he said.

45 minutes later, there was still no sign of Patricia so Allen called 911.

“It seems to be, on average, [people in this situation] can make it about two miles an hour … so in just one hour we would be looking at 16 square miles in each individual direction,” said Ben Carnes with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Mesa County Search and Rescue crews have six different teams, including K-9 units, crews on horseback, ATVs, ground crews, communication and helicopters.

“We’re in a pretty remote area to find someone in so this is not a particularly easy search, but we’re doing the best we can,” said Carnes.

When Patricia left the house she was wearing a sky blue jacket with stripes on the sleeves, blue pants and walking shoes.

“The temperature is dropping … she’s going to be cold, probably thirsty, and I’m hoping they find her soon,” said Osberg.

Authorities say they plan on calling in additional personnel and resources as the search continues.

“I’m very thankful for what they are doing, they are doing an excellent job. Unfortunately, we did not find her as quickly as we had hoped,” said Osberg.

Patricia is 5′ 6″ tall 156 pounds with gray hair and brown eyes.

If you have any information or have seen Patricia please call 970-242-6707.

Missing Person Kara Nichols of Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Police are calling the disappearance of a 19-year-old Colo. girl who has been missing for more than a month suspicious, reports CBS affiliate KREX.

Kara Nichols was last seen in Colorado Springs on October 9.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office calls the disappearance suspicious and officials say she might be the victim of a subculture that exploits would-be models, KREX reports. They would not elaborate on what kind of exploitation she might have fallen victim to.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Investigators say before her disappearance she told her roommate she might go to Denver, but left behind her purse and money, KREX reports. Nichols spent most of Oct. 9 with an unknown woman, who police have not yet located.

Investigators reportedly say that although Nichols was active on social media and frequently used her cellphone, she has not been using either since she went missing.

Nichols is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 120 pounds, with blonde hair and green eyes. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call sheriff’s detectives at (719) 520-7227.

Arson Investigation York City, PA Woman Sentenced

A York City woman who set her own apartment on fire has been sentenced to a lengthy term in state prison.

Rhonda Conway, 58, formerly of 107 S. Queen St., pleaded no contest Oct. 11 to arson.

On Tuesday, she was sentenced to nine to 18 years in prison by Common Pleas Judge Michael E. Bortner, according to court records.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

Conway started fires in four different locations inside her second-floor apartment on Nov. 26, 2011, York City Police said.

She then used a tricycle to smash the window of first-floor tenant Stacy Luckey, then yelled she was going to kill Luckey, police said.

Conway ran away when officers arrived on scene, but was arrested a short time later at a gas station a block away, police said.

Three people were displaced by the fire, which caused moderate to heavy damage to Conway’s apartment and some smoke and water damage to Luckey’s first-floor apartment, fire officials said.

First assistant public defender Clasina Houtman, who represented Conway, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Defendants who plead no contest aren’t admitting guilt. Rather, they are saying they won’t contest the charges against them. Otherwise, a no-contest plea has the same effect as a guilty plea.
