Wrongful Death Man Shot in Letcher County

Police are investigating after a Letcher County man was shot and killed late Wednesday night.

The incident happened at about 11:30 p.m. in Gordon. Police say Wayne Duff, 37, was shot to death when he allegedly tried to break into the home of James Brown. Police say a verbal altercation occurred between the two and threatening remarks were made toward Brown. Duff then began to approach Brown and Brown discharged a handgun toward Duff, striking him in the chest.

Private Detective 2 Former Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies and Stolen Guns

Wednesday was sentencing day for two former Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies accused of stealing guns that were supposed to be booked into evidence.

Merle McDaniel and Bill Beers once wore Fayette County deputy sheriff uniforms in the same courthouse, but Wednesday both were out of uniform for good. Each were sentenced for stealing guns confiscated by the office.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

McDaniel receiving the harshest punishment. He must serve four months in jail, then the last eight months of his one-year sentence on home incarceration. The special judge brought in to preside over the case said McDaniel made excuses instead of accepting responsibility. Police say he pawned two of the stolen guns, one of which was never recovered.

Beers was given 60 days home incarceration and put on two years probation. His attorney says he faulted by not booking weapons into evidence in the time frame required.

Both former sergeants resigned earlier this year after 14 guns confiscated by them were unaccounted for.

Wrongful Death Police in Lane County, OR Seek Info on Body Found in Jan.

After serving prison time for molesting children, Roy Vernon Mathews returned to Lane County in the late 1990s and spent the final few years of his life drifting from place to place, occasionally running into trouble with the law.

He disappeared in April 2005, when his girlfriend filed a missing person report with Springfield police.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“It’s not uncommon, or illegal, for an adult to just take off, and there weren’t a lot of red flags at the time that suggested anything (suspicious) had happened to him,” Springfield police Sgt. David Lewis said Wednesday.

Mathews’ case finally gained serious police attention last month. That’s when authorities learned that DNA extracted from skeletal remains found in January east of Mapleton had matched a DNA sample that Mathews provided to state officials after a Lane County jury found him guilty in 1987 of first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree sodomy.

Lane County sheriff’s detectives announced Wednesday that they’re treating Mathews’ death as a homicide because evidence — some of which they’re not ready to publicly disclose — suggests that someone killed him before apparently dumping his body in a remote, forested area off Siuslaw River Road.

Investigators now want to hear from anyone with information regarding Mathews’ associates and activities in the months before his disappearance. At this point they have few details regarding that part of his life.

“We’d like to get a good idea of what he did from the time he got out of prison until the time he went missing,” sheriff’s Sgt. Cliff Harrold said. “So far we haven’t been able to find anyone who knew much about him in his last few years.”

Court records show that Mathews, who was 54 when his missing person report was filed, lived at a number of addresses in the Eugene-Springfield area in the early 2000s. He may have been “a little bit of a couch surfer,” Harrold said.

Those years were marked by several brushes with police, who arrested him for felony drug possession in 2003 and for failing to register as a sex offender in 2001 and again in January 2005, about three months before he disappeared.

Harrold said investigators have interviewed the woman who filed the original missing person report, but that the discussion “was not very productive.”

Detectives aren’t counting on the woman to be able to provide additional details that might help them learn more about the circumstances that ultimately led to Mathews’ death, Harrold said.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Harrold declined to say whether bullet holes or other signs of physical injury were apparent from an examination of the skeletal remains, which were discovered by a logging crew that had been working in the woods last winter.

But the remote location in which the bones were found raises suspicions, as do “other indications that (Mathews’) death was a result of foul play,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact sheriff’s Detective Aaron Hoberg at 541-682-4312.

Missing Person Megan DiPiazza of La Crescenta, CA

Sal DiPiazza wants to know what happened to his wife, Megan DiPiazza.

The 33-year-old La Crescenta mother of two went missing last Sunday, Nov. 11, following an argument over the fate of their marriage, Sal DiPiazza told Patch.

Investigators have not released further information about Megan DiPiazza because she is considered a voluntary missing person, said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“They call this a voluntary missing person. But this is not a voluntary missing person to me,” Sal DiPiazza said.

Megan is a mother to a 13-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, he said.

“She can’t stay away from her child for more than a day without checking or calling,” Sal DiPiazza said.

Investigators went to her Sunland apartment and found her purse and wallet were there, he said.

“The only thing we noticed missing was her driver’s license, her debit card and her phone. There were no clothes packed or any make up. So she literally must have had her license or ATM card in her pocket and grabbed her car and took off,” DiPiazza said.

Since police found a “note saying goodbye” at the bottom of a trash can, he said. Family and friends have called local hospitals and rehabilitation centers to find information about her.

Police have said she has a history of depression.

“I just don’t know how long it takes for Glendale Police Department to go from voluntary missing person to kidnapping or abduction. She’s got to be checked in somewhere,” he said.

There is no activity on her card or phone, he said.

“We’ve been trying to follow up with any friends or family, or somebody who might see her,” he said.

DiPiazza said media reports indicating his wife could be with friends is not true.

“She was by herself. It’s not true that she was with friends. We don’t know if she went to a friend’s house or just went for a drive. It’s not like her to leave for long periods of time,” he said.

Megan and Sal DiPiazza separated about a month ago, with Megan getting her own apartment in Sunland.

“We’ve been working on our marriage with some time to separate and work things over,” he said.

The couple went out to dinner earlier that week, he said.

“She loves her job. She loved going to work. She’s a workaholic. She was working late just to get some extra money. Even if she was working late, even before she moved out, she would call me. She would always check in,” DiPiazza said.

Sal DiPiazza is continuing to work with family, friends, Glendale Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department and the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station to find Megan.

His 13-year-old daughter is from a previous relationship and will be spending time with her other side of the family, he said. His 5-year-old son does not know his mother is missing.

“My son doesn’t know what’s going on… he just thinks mommy’s working late,” he said.

“I was with her the last 10 years. This is just not her style and it’s not the way she is. She’s a very self-concious person. She had her bag with her beef jerky and her sodas. She’d bring her make up bag with her even to the grocery store. She’s not the kind of person who would hop in her car and take off,” he said.

Megan DiPiazza is 33-years-old, with blond hair, green eyes, 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 122 pounds. She has naturally curly hair.

Her vehicle is a 2013 Gray Toyota Scion plate number 6XJR885 (Vehicle may not have any plates on it).

Anyone with information that would lead to her whereabouts is urged to contact Glendale Police Sgt. Jeff Newton at (818) 548-3987 or (818) 548-4840.

Wrongful Death Elderly Man Appears in Court Over Road Rage Death

An an elderly Rockcastle County man accused of killing his sister in a road rage case was in court again Wednesday as his lawyer once again raised the question of his competency to stand trial.

Clyde White, 78, faces murder and attempted murder charges after running his two elderly siblings off the road in Rockcastle County back in August 2011. White’s sister, Dorothy Whitaker, was taken to UK Hospital and later died from her injuries.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

On Wednesday, White’s lawyer claimed that though White was found competent to stand trial back in September, he should be tested again.

The judge in the case questioned if the request was just a ploy to delay the trial. However, in the end the judge granted a continuance, and set the trial date for January 14 unless White’s competency becomes an issue.

Police say White was behind the wheel of a van racing along I-75 at speeds over 100 mph, chasing his brother Lawrence White, 82, and his sister, Dorothy Whitaker, 83. The vehicles exited onto KY-461 and just before the intersection of HWY-150 in Rockcastle County, Clyde White crashed into his siblings’ van.

Clyde White left the scene, crashed into another vehicle and then returned to the scene. Police arrested him and charged him with two counts of attempted murder and wanton endangerment. When he was arrested, White never explained to officers what happened.

Fraud Investigation Beware of Cyber Monday Scams

Beware of Cyber Monday… and Beyond

At this time of year, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reminds consumers to be wary of Internet fraud during the holiday shopping season.

Here are a few of the scams to look out for:

New products or gift cards being sold on auction or classified advertisement websites where the price is significantly lower than any sales price in retail outlets;
“One day only” websites featuring the sale of specific items in high demand;
Phishing and scam e-mails, text messages, or phone calls that look or sound like they’re coming from a well-known retailer and that ask you to verify a credit card number or to update personal account information; and
Gift card offers on social media sites claiming to be from major retailers…often, these offers are used to gain access to your social media account and personal information.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

In addition to more information on specific Internet scams, IC3’s latest warning also includes tips to help you avoid being a victim of cyber scams (#1 tip: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is).
