Identity Theft Police Receive Tip From Man Who Broke Into House

Police in Florida found out about an alleged home-based identity theft and fraud scheme after receiving a tip from an unlikely source – the man they arrested for breaking into the same home.

The man who eventually confessed to police to breaking into 27-year-old Eric Jermaine Spivey and 38-year-old Chenequa Austin’s home in Lauderhill, Florida, first told police December 15 that something shady was going on there, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel reported.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Two days later, a detective and a U.S. Secret Service agent were inside the home. The detective and the agent pretended to be investigating the burglary but were really there to get a peek inside of the alleged crime operation.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“Chenequa Austin brought me through the residence to identify the path of the burglar. While inside the home, I immediately noticed, in plain view, numerous gift cards, debit cards, credit cards, and prepaid stored value cards readily apparent in various locations in the residence,” Jason Lanfersiek, the Secret Service agent wrote in a court document.

In total, they found 314 credit cards, gift cards and pre-paid debit cards. They also found a device that programs and reads the cards. Designer clothing, jewelry, flat screen TVs, Sony PlayStation 4s, and Apple iPads were also found, many of them brand new and still in the original packaging, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Another item that was discovered in the home, a Glock 19 handgun, is now being used as evidence against Spivey in an attempted second-degree murder case that was filed against him Miami-Dade County, Florida, in 2013.

Spivey and Austin each pleaded not guilty this week to aggravated identity theft, fraud and conspiracy charges. Spivey was released from custody on $35,000 bond but Austin is still being detained after a judge declared her to be a flight risk.

Identity Theft Three Men Plead Not Guilty in Boise Credit Card Scam

Three men who drove from Mexico and allegedly used counterfeit credit cards to buy merchandise at eight Boise stores have pleaded not guilty to 27 counts each of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and possession of 15 or more bogus cards.

Carlos J.M. Molino, 22, Rafael Perez, 30, and Irving Gonzalez Bocanegra, 24, all from Sonora, Mexico, entered the pleas last week in federal court in Boise.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The three men, who were arrested by Boise police on March 31, were found with more than $13,000 in goods and 96 fake credit cards. All but nine of the cards, which carried account numbers belonging to someone else but embossed with the names of the defendants, were found taped inside a magazine. The others were found in their possession.

Boise police also recovered 10 gift cards that were fraudulently purchased with counterfeit cards.

The men made purchases at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Nordstrom Rack, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, Ross, H&M and JC Penney.

They were caught after they went to a FedEx store in Boise and began packing the goods for shipment.

If convicted, the men face up to 20 years in prison on each of the wire fraud charges and up to 10 years for possession of 15 or more fake credit cards.

Aggravated identity theft carries a two-year minimum sentence that runs consecutive to other prison terms.

The three men are scheduled to go to trial June 15.

Private Detective: 2014 FBI Community Partners Recognized

Creating community programs that empower at-risk and underprivileged youth. Providing support and resources for refugees from war-torn countries. Training child protective services personnel, health care workers, and other professionals to recognize and provide assistance to victims of human trafficking. Strengthening the academic experience for students in struggling schools.

Today at FBI Headquarters, 57 individuals and organizations from around the nation were recognized by Director James Comey for making extraordinary contributions—like those noted above—to education and to the prevention of crime and violence.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

The Bureau has been presenting its Director’s Community Leadership Awards (DCLA) for more than two decades to ordinary citizens and organizations striving to build stronger, safer, and more cohesive communities, and this latest group of honorees continues to set the bar exceedingly high.

DCLA.jpg
The 2014 Director’s Community Leadership Award trophies await presentation.

Comey said that there are two reasons for presenting these awards every year. First, it’s an acknowledgement of the fact that part of the FBI’s work of contributing to the protection of communities around the country is to “build partnerships with other people who are all about the protection of the community.” And second, the awards enable the Bureau to hold the recipients up as role models of “what being a citizen really looks like, what being part of a community really looks like.”

This year’s DCLA honorees, as in past years, were selected by FBI field offices and represent many different sectors—non-profits, business, military, academia, the clergy, behavioral sciences, the media, sports, and civic groups. But while their backgrounds may differ, they all have the same overarching goal: Change their communities for the better and make a positive difference in the lives of other people.

Among those we honor today for their selfless actions:

  • A first generation Japanese-American—and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient—who mentors young students at a number of multi-cultural schools in New Mexico and inspires them to be good citizens;
  • An anti-violence group in North Carolina that works with a local police department to target the most violent offenders with focused messages about the impact of violence and offers to help them turn their lives around;
  • A marketing professional in Indiana who uses her expertise to help law enforcement solve cold cases, bringing justice for victims and ensuring closure for families;
  • A Florida doctor who works to facilitate cooperation and goodwill between the Sikh community and local law enforcement;
  • A Kentucky man who works to provide a full range of services to refugee and immigrant families moving into the city to help them successfully integrate into the community;
  • An Oklahoma woman who has worked tirelessly on behalf of consumers—particularly seniors—who have been victimized by financial fraudsters; and
  • A California organization that offers a variety of prevention and intervention programs to support victims of human trafficking.

Comey noted the diversity of the Director’s Community Leadership Awards recipients—the “diversity of good in America,” he called it. He added, “I was struck by how many different people from different backgrounds, with different heritages and different traditions, were all doing good but in so many different ways.”

Pulaski County Deputies said an elderly man who went missing on Wednesday, has been found dead in Lake Cumberland. They said 88-year-old Eugene Jones didn’t come home Wednesday night.

At around 9:45 Thursday morning, a call to the Pulaski County 911 Center led deputies to the end of Richardson Lane off Cedar Grove Road to begin a search for Jones. After a short search, neighbors found Jones’s pickup truck at the end of Richardson Lane.

Investigators said they were notified and a search of the area was begun. The Somerset Police Department provided a bloodhound tracking dog and personnel from the Rescue Squad, Burnside Fire Department, and Bronston Fire Department assisted deputies in an unsuccessful search of the area for Jones.
